The Origins of Indie Music
2 comments so far - Check Manuel Career's News! --> Manuel Marino Official <--
Photo by PeterTeaIndie music developed in North America and the UK during the 1980s out of alternative rock, although elements of indie rock can be found as early in the 60s in the music of bands such as The Kinks. What exactly constitutes indie rock is contested by musicians and critics, with some claiming that indie rock bands should be signed to independent record labels while others claim that the artistic aesthetic and sound is more important.
This ethos extended to being in complete control over the sound and look of the band without interference from the record label. In the 1980s, during the early days of indie music, bands like REM and The Pixies were amongst the most well known bands in the USA and overseas. When The Smiths released their debut album, also called The Smiths, in 1984 they would launch a successful career that saw them become the definitive British indie music band.
Pearl Jam and Nirvana helped develop a new style, which would come to be known as grunge during the 90s. This sound became extremely popular and found an even broader audience after Kurt Cobain’s death. Another style of indie that developed was lo-fi, of which Beck is typical. This style of music used simple recording techniques and made a conscious effort not to pander to mainstream tastes.

How Has Popular Music Changed in the Last 50 Years?
No comments yet - Check Manuel Career's News! --> Manuel Marino Official <--
Photo by saffirahwebThe last 50 years has seen a huge change in popular music. Not only have the most popular sounds and genres changed and developed, but the way that we access music has changed almost beyond recognition. Many of the biggest names from as far back as the 60s are still instantly recognizable today, and their influence can be heard in even the most contemporary sounding records.
In the 60s and 70s vinyl records were still the most popular format for playing the music of such iconic rock bands as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. While heavy metal took off with Black Sabbath, and punk reached a climax with The Sex Pistols soul and reggae from the likes of Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley was also hugely popular.
The launch of MTV and CDs in the 1980s may have been as significant as the music that was made during this decade. Madonna is widely recognised as one of the most iconic female artists of all time while Michael Jackson can claim to have the highest selling record ever with his 1982 release “Thriller.” Bon Jovi and The Beastie Boys are just two acts that also made waves in the 80s, amongst a host of other rock and hip hop acts.
A Brief History of Techno

Photo by technochickThe word techno is well known these days, and the music that it alludes to has been around long enough for people to kind of take it for granted. It’s basically the root of modern dance music, and it came into being only a couple of decades ago. So where exactly did it comes from and how did it achieve notoriety so quickly? Well, here is a little history of just that.
As is often the case with music, it was a very small number of people that cultivated the techno sound, and indeed created it. The Belleville three – Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May – and another high school friend called Eddie Fowlkes, were the people that brought techno in being. As teenagers they liked funkedelic music, such as Devo, and wanted to make some new, catchy sound of their own. It was to be less alienating than the deliberately challenging music of the new funk crowd, but still make use of crazy sounds and innovation.
Detroit has a history of embracing new music. From early jazz, to Motown, disco and then to the New Wave Funkedelic music that inspired the Belleville crowd. Techno spread quickly and achieved a following in many clubs and underground venues. It was seen as a form of music that made a feature of technology instead of just using it. Basically the tracks all embraced an artificial, mechanical sound, along with jazz influences and beats that you could dance to.

Photo by ozmafanWhen you want to have a great time listening to live music, the venue can make all the difference. If you’re somewhere drab and lifeless it can make even your favourite bands less impressive. But there are plenty of places across the world that really push the boat out when it comes to showing people a great time and giving them the perfect atmosphere for whatever music they’re into. These are some of the well-known and not so well known venues out there.
In England you’ve got a good selection of places. On the one hand there are the grand halls, such as the Royal Albert, and on the other countless amounts of pleasantly grotty drinking clubs. But in between you find some truly unique treats. A small village in the North might seem like an unlikely place to start, but in Hovingham village hall you’ll find The Shed. Here they host some of the coolest experimental jazz and folk events you’ll ever see. Alternatively London pulls off weird and wonderful too, with The Hideout in Soho. It’s kind of a caravan above a shop, and it’s really exclusive, but if you’re hip enough to get in it’s really something special.
Hit Europe and you’ve got some incredible treats for the more hardcore night out. A38 in Budapest is a ship that used to carry coal, and now plays host to some serious dance and electronic. If you get hungry they do a weird cockerel stew to keep you going. For rock head to Wild at Heart in Berlin. It’s part of what used to be serious anarchist territory, and it’s a weird mix of whiskey, Pacific religious icons and Elvis memorabilia. Of course there’s always La Scala for some opera too.

Photo by williamhartzShould your goal is to be to possess a centered voice and having an effortless performance while you sing, figuring out how to have a relaxed or better known among singers as a “released” diaphragm is the best way to achieve this. It’s not unheard of for first time singers who appear to have huge lung capacity and pretty relaxed diaphragms, prepared for singing a song in reality freeze up at the last moment. They should never be concerned as it’s nothing wrong with the diaphragm, nevertheless it cannot perform the job effectively for some odd reasons and that is what we will be talking about here.
Getting through an entire song for any singer is certainly a chore especially if they are using improper breathing techniques and can be scary for those that are not aware of this. Despite the presence of good breathing technique, singers will discover that the demands of a song will leave their diaphragm feeling pretty constricted and rather uncomfortable. Vocal Training students who have been singing and studying for some years and being able to open up with their voices nevertheless are unable to access that last 15% missing from their performance and they’ve got no clue regarding how to tap into it.
Can anybody really think of the logical reason for why a singer can’t obtain and master this “so- called ” invisible power? My old training singing strategies made it harder for me in past times because I used to be explaining things to my students in a technical style as opposed to working on helping them access the core feeling found within their own body. Singing, at its very root depends upon emotions and feeling free to convey them to uncover your vulnerability with virtually no hindrances mentally or physically, which everybody knows is no small feat.
