Not only have the most popular sounds and genres changed and developed, but the way that we access music has changed almost beyond recognition. Many of the biggest names from as far back as the 60s are still instantly recognizable today, and their influence can be heard in even the most contemporary sounding records.

In the 60s and 70s vinyl records were still the most popular format for playing the music of such iconic rock bands as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. While heavy metal took off with Black Sabbath, and punk reached a climax with The Sex Pistols soul and reggae from the likes of Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley was also hugely popular.

The launch of MTV and CDs in the 1980s may have been as significant as the music that was made during this decade. Madonna is widely recognised as one of the most iconic female artists of all time while Michael Jackson can claim to have the highest selling record ever with his 1982 release “Thriller.” Bon Jovi and The Beastie Boys are just two acts that also made waves in the 80s, amongst a host of other rock and hip hop acts.

Detroit has a history of embracing new music. From early jazz, to Motown, disco and then to the New Wave Funkedelic music that inspired the Belleville crowd. Techno spread quickly and achieved a following in many clubs and underground venues. It was seen as a form of music that made a feature of technology instead of just using it. Basically the tracks all embraced an artificial, mechanical sound, along with jazz influences and beats that you could dance to.

In England you’ve got a good selection of places. On the one hand there are the grand halls, such as the Royal Albert, and on the other countless amounts of pleasantly grotty drinking clubs. But in between you find some truly unique treats. A small village in the North might seem like an unlikely place to start, but in Hovingham village hall you’ll find The Shed. Here they host some of the coolest experimental jazz and folk events you’ll ever see. Alternatively London pulls off weird and wonderful too, with The Hideout in Soho. It’s kind of a caravan above a shop, and it’s really exclusive, but if you’re hip enough to get in it’s really something special.

Hit Europe and you’ve got some incredible treats for the more hardcore night out. A38 in Budapest is a ship that used to carry coal, and now plays host to some serious dance and electronic. If you get hungry they do a weird cockerel stew to keep you going. For rock head to Wild at Heart in Berlin. It’s part of what used to be serious anarchist territory, and it’s a weird mix of whiskey, Pacific religious icons and Elvis memorabilia. Of course there’s always La Scala for some opera too.
