When we sing, we are sustaining speech. The element that makes it possible to sustain or hold a sound is air. It is just that simple. Not enough air – no stable sound or tone. Air acts as a set or cushion for sound to ride or sit on. If we want to produce a long sound, more air is needed. When trying to sing higher, again, more air is needed. If our singing is weak and too soft, you guessed it, more air is needed. It all begins with the inhalation process.

As we inhale to take in air, we must make sure we are inflating around the waistline. This will cause expansion in the abdominal and ribcage and lung areas. You will now have enough air for the sound you want to emit. At this point, you are probably using your mind to help you sing a sound you have heard before and want to duplicate. It is at this point that you begin your tonal attack (the first sound you make), and decide that your singing is either good or bad. This is what I call “black and white” thinking. You are, of course judging your singing voice.

‘The culture of a society is its shared meanings, values and practices’ (Woodward, 2004, p.22). With this in mind this essay will show the UK’s cultural diversity by exploring leisure, sport, migration and ethnicity, highlighting shared meanings, values and practices. Because identity is about the relationship between the personal and the social, this essay will draw the link between culture and identity, and show how sometimes social structures restrict identity despite an apparent acceptance of cultural diversity.

The UK’s cultural diversity can be seen on many levels, one of those being leisure. Leisure can be any shared practice, value or meaning from art and literature, to bingo or the opera. Woodward, adding to her above definition of culture, offers that it is a way of people identifying with one another (Woodward, 2005, p.37). So if culture is about shared identity and inclusion, it must also be about difference and exclusion (Woodward, 2005, p.38). To use the example of the cultural practices above of bingo or the opera, it is highly unlikely that the same group of people would attend both activities. Woodward argues this is because some carry more cultural weight than others, so something like the opera would be associated with an identity of ‘high’ culture, whilst bingo may not be (2005, p.38). This would suggest that not only is there cultural diversity in the UK, but also that culture and class are interlinked. Therefore, when looking at leisure it would seem that despite a diverse range of cultural activities being undertaken, class restricts the cultural agency of an individual. Bourdieu recognizes this restriction of agency with his term ‘cultural capital’ (Woodward, 2005, p.38).

The definition of “human” is circular: we are human by virtue of the properties that make us human (i.e., distinct from animal and machine). It is a definition by negation: that which separates us from animal and machine is our “human-ness”.
