The Information Technology (IT) department was once comprised of a single Computer Operator who stored data on magnetic tapes and placed them in boxes stored in the basement. The history of information technology is fascinating, driven by the demands of a competitive business environment on one hand and significant changes in the nature of computers on the other. IT systems now come in various advanced forms, providing essential information to managers who use it to make critical decisions about their businesses’ operations.

Information or Internet Technology can take the form of computers, robots, sensors, and decision support systems. The latest iteration of Information & Technologies being implemented in businesses today involves the use of handheld devices to assist managers and subordinates in their daily operations. Computer Technology Auditing (IT auditing) originated as Electronic Data Processing (EDP) Auditing and evolved primarily due to advances in accounting systems, the need for IT control, and the impact of computers on attestation services.

IT is revolutionizing the way businesses operate. Advanced technologies have become the single-most influential force shaping the structure and functioning of work organizations, factories, offices, and executive suites. When people hear the words “Information & Business Technology,” the first things that come to mind are computers and the Internet. It may also bring up terms like “network,” “intranet,” “server,” “firewall,” “security,” as well as more arcane expressions such as “router,” “T-1,” “Ethernet,” or the mysterious and exotic-sounding “VOIP.” The term “Business IT” is not new and has not always referred to computer-related aspects. Information technology is as old as the human mind itself if you consider the brain an information processor. IT as a science can be traced back to the earliest attempts to communicate and store information. Essentially, information technology is the communication and storage of information, along with the ability to process and use the stored data.

Information technology is the use of computers and software to manage information. In some companies, this is referred to as Management Information Services (MIS) or Information Services (IS). The information technology department of a large company is responsible for storing information, protecting it, processing systems, transmitting data as needed, and later retrieving information as required. The benefits derived from IT technology come in various forms, such as allowing businesses to complete tasks they had been doing before at lower costs, opening up opportunities to try new things, and enabling companies to “re-engineer” parts of their organizations to achieve better strategic positions.
