Art schools are educational institutions, ranging from elementary to graduate levels, with a primary focus on visual arts such as design, illustration, painting, photography, and sculpture. Sculpture involves creating three-dimensional art by shaping or combining various materials, such as stone, metal, glass, or wood. These schools differ from larger institutions that may offer majors or degrees in visual arts but as only one aspect of a broader range of programs, such as liberal arts and sciences. France’s École des Beaux-Arts is perhaps the first example of organized education in art, breaking from the traditional master/apprentice model. If accredited as a university, many art schools offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Fine Art B.A. in the UK and possibly other degrees.

In the United States, institutions commonly known as art schools are specialized, freestanding schools of art and design. They typically offer Bachelor of Fine Arts and/or MFA degrees and provide a variety of other degrees (e.g. BA, BS, BArch, MA, MArch, MBA, etc.). Bachelor of Fine Arts and BS degrees differ from BA degrees because around 60-65% of a student’s coursework is focused on art and design, while the remainder is focused on liberal arts and art history. In the Bachelor of Arts degree, these proportions are reversed. The MFA is traditionally considered the “terminal” degree in the field of art and design. Doctoral degrees in art and design in the United States are rare.

Art schools vary widely in terms of curriculum, structure, focus, and size. They range from small institutions with just over 100 students (e.g. Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, Oregon College of Art and Craft, Art Academy of Cincinnati) to mid-sized schools like the Kansas City Art Institute, with about 600 students, to schools with over 4,000 students (e.g. the Academy of Arts College, Parsons the New School for Design, Pratt Institute, and Savannah College of Art and Design).

Unlike Europe and other countries, art schools in the U.S. are private and not-for-profit, meaning they are not government-funded. Almost all art schools in this category are members of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). While there are several state-supported (public) college art departments, there is only one state-supported freestanding art school in the United States – Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. There are also several for-profit art schools, such as the Art Institutes, a chain of 41 art schools located throughout North America. Some art schools collaborate with nearby colleges for cooperative programs, such as the Maryland Institute College of Art with John Hopkins University, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design with Marquette University, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with the University of Pennsylvania, Rhode Island School of Design with Brown University, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts with Tufts University.
