We often think of art as paintings or photographs hanging on walls around us, or as statues standing freely on the floor. Much of the art we encounter is more or less at our eye level, and if it rises above, it typically starts at our line of sight. However, some of the most beautiful art in the world has been created to be positioned high above our heads, where we must crane our necks to see it.

People tend to focus on what is immediately visible around them, and what lies above is often overlooked. It takes someone with a unique perspective on the world to create a work of art that requires special effort to be viewed and appreciated. Here are a few stunning examples of ceiling art, along with a suggestion for creating your own unique ceiling.

• The Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo in the early 16th century, is the most famous example of ceiling art in the world. Alongside the artwork on the chapel’s walls, the ceiling depicts numerous scenes from Christian doctrine. The best-known portion of the chapel ceiling features the Creation of Adam, showing the hands of God and Adam reaching towards one another.

• The ceiling of Grand Central Station’s terminal in New York City was painted by Paul César Helleu in 1912. It was restored in the 1930s after years of pollution from tobacco smoke darkened it beyond recognition. A dark patch of dirt was left on the ceiling to illustrate the extent of the restoration work. The original painting portrays the constellations of the Zodiac, although the stars are painted in reverse. This unique perspective may have been an error by the artist, but when discovered, the project’s backers insisted that Helleu drew inspiration from a medieval manuscript that depicted the stars as they would appear from outside the celestial sphere.

People often use fabric to create draped ceilings for various purposes, such as covering an unattractive existing ceiling or creating a sense of sky indoors. Regardless of the reason, a fabric ceiling has the potential to become a work of art in your home. Choose fabric patterns and textures that both complement the room and evoke the specific atmosphere you are aiming for. Allow the fabric to drape naturally, showcasing its flexibility and fluidity, and the space will quickly transform into your own unique masterpiece.
