Drawing Upside Down Draws Out Creative Dimensions

Photo by aaipodpicsI’m sure at some time in your life you’ve tried to write something upside down so the person facing you could read it, and you had to really concentrate on what you were doing because it didn’t come natural. Think about the last time you did that and how difficult it was to write the letters. Now, let’s say you see something and you remember something from your visual memory, try to draw it upside down?
Amazingly enough you are able to do this, however, if you are looking at a picture and trying to draw that picture upside down it’s much more difficult isn’t it? Do you know why? Now, if you thought it through you probably would figure out that it has something to do with the way the eyes and the brain work together when you are looking at an object. If this was your final answer, you would be partly correct.
Still, in this exercise you might like to know that fMRI brain scanners show that the creative parts of the brain light up while doing this. That’s interesting because you’re not really being all that creative because you are copying something. In fact, the brain has to work pretty hard to be able to draw something upside down in this way.
So therefore, if you are trying to get your creative juices flowing, and get into the proverbial “creative flow” or even if you’re trying to get over writer’s block, you might try this little trick. The first time I tried I couldn’t believe how well it helped get into the creative flow. I was actually amazed, and I think you will be too. Please consider all this.
