Engage Your Audience? What Does That Really Mean In The Arts? "What does pop culture have that we don't? Popular culture has the ability to create a rabid fandom. They use their celebrities, their fan likes and dislikes, and their ability to attract an authentic niche following in order to create a continual conversation."

Pop culture phenomena also understand that their rise to the top is fickle and fleeting and they must maximize the impact of whatever they do when they do it.

As an indie game developer that rings false to me.  It's certainly the model of the mainstream (popular) game industry, but whipping everyone into a marketing frenzy before product release, just so you can maximize sales in the 1st month on the shelves of Brick & Mortar retail, is not a luxury that we indies can afford.  We have to prepare for the long tail of content, which means engaging our audiences over time.  Now, what we have over many of the traditional Art forms, is that games are not passive media.  Granted, we struggle with getting games to be more highbrow, an agenda that the mainstream industry clearly doesn't value yet.  Even "indie" does not have to mean artistically inclined; rather, independently financed and controlling the profit destiny of one's work.  I think however that we sit at a historically enviable position of trying to engineer "engaging Art," and that it will inevitably happen sooner or later.
