Female hostility in modern country music

I've been noticing a trend in songs by female country singers (and songwriters) which can only be described as "man-hating" songs and in a lot of cases talk about shooting or injuring their boyfriends/husbands (see Gunpowder & Lead.) I can't recall ever hearing a mainstream male country song where the singer talks about physically injuring their girlfriends/wives. The general theme with the male song is that they're "gonna leave".

Does anyone know of any (mainstream) country song where a man sings about injuring a woman?
What are your thoughts on the "I'm tough" trend in country women's lyrics?

Pami you're kidding, right?

But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin',
I hang my head and cry.

Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash.

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand?
Alright. I'm goin down to shoot my old lady,
you know I caught her messin' 'round with another man.

- Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix

Ok that one's blues, not country, but same diff. Plenty of misogyny with Jimi. Someone compiled a list of songs to kill your woman by. Near the top of that list:

She was low down and trifling
And she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to Grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone

Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash

So AJ, I think you're engaged in selective observation. Shooting people for whatever reason is part of the genre.

I believe you're right. Just remembered one from ZZ Top called Esther be the One

Esther be the one that shoots a machine gun
Whether you like it or not
Midnight or daylight stay out of her sight
'cause I heard she's one helluva shot

I think she is kidding, bvanevery. Music is 85% about love, but all the rest is about anything, also about such things, pami.

Hmm now I'm thinking about genres that are 85% death and destruction.

LOL, country music follows a trend, mostly. It's all about sadness, leaving, heartbreak, beer, cheating on your partner, love, etc. Not all country music is like this, but I would dare say that over 60% is.

One of my husband's favorite's is: Rodney Atkin's – Farmer's Daughter, and another one: Lee Brice – Love Like Crazy.

These songs are more about love…

I love Brad Paisley's – When You Get Where You're Going…

I don't listen to Country much anymore, I've switched to mostly Christian music now. A few awesome Christian artists are: Casting Crowns, Hillsong, Chris Tomlin… check them out on Youtube. sf smile Forum

Cool! ianguitar, let me know what you think – there is enough variation to the music that if one type isn't your style, another one may be sf wink Forum
