One aspect of the Igbo people of Nigeria that remains unshakable is their ability to praise and worship the Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. Despite the rapid decline in moral values affecting every aspect of the nation, Igbo gospel singers continue to uplift the name of God and bring joy to people with their beautiful music.

The Igbo people have excelled in gospel music within Nigeria. Worshiping and praising God in the Igbo language has surpassed all expectations. Listening to Igbo gospel music today might make one think that God is an Igbo. There’s no doubt that God appreciates the work of Igbo gospel singers.

Igbo gospel music has the potential to be a hit anytime and anywhere. It has transcended ethnic boundaries and reached every corner of the world where these songs inspire worship. Any top 10 list that fails to recognize the Igbo as a leading ethnic group in Nigerian gospel music is questionable. The Igbo people are truly blessed in gospel music, contributing wholeheartedly with uplifting Christian songs that could provoke even an atheist to worship the Lord. Rosemary Chukwu Onumaegbu will always be remembered as a musician who touched souls with her music, spreading her message to numerous households and helping to bless them.

Who could ever forget Njideka Okeke, known for her unique praise of God? Listening to Njideka evokes an image of God in one’s mind, making one long to see the God who has blessed her beyond human imagination. Her music reveals a deep reverence for God.

“Akanchawa” is a song that popularized the Igbo language among Nigerians so effectively that it has become synonymous with “blessing” in many Nigerian languages. The Ngwa musical group will go down in the history of Nigerian gospel music as one of the greatest. This group has touched many souls in homes, churches, and other places. The group is sure to be a favorite of anyone who truly loves and worships God. Choosing a favorite among the group’s numerous songs can be a difficult task. This group has brought the Igbo people and the people of Nigeria closer to God.

Igbo songs are always in high demand when it comes to praising God. The Igboland is akin to the historical Israel of God, and the people are indeed proud of this heritage. Have you ever heard of Reverend Father Mbarka, the Man of God who sings gospel songs? He praises God and has become a household name in Nigeria. Father Mbarka sings both in Igbo and English, uniquely delivering his music in a way that has never been done before. Chinedu Nwadike is another talented musician. You will never be bored listening to him. In fact, his music is essential when you want to praise the Lord. He cannot be ignored; Prophetess Helen Nkume of the Cherubim and Seraphim will comfort and make you feel the presence of God with her soothing yet moving music. You will appreciate her way of praising God. There are countless Igbo gospel singers who have made the Igbo people proud in the gospel music arena. They have brought us so close to God that we imagine Him in an Igbo setting.

It seems that no gospel music in Nigeria is truly complete unless it has been performed in Igbo. The Midnight Crew serves as a prime example of this, as we have all come to realize that it is indeed possible to praise God using all the various languages in the country. “Igwe” is titled in Igbo but performed in both Yoruba and Igbo. It is a captivating song to listen to on any day, and if played at a party, people will undoubtedly let loose and dance to it, forgetting that it is a song of God handed down to us to help us understand how He should be praised and that He is unparalleled. This is the impact that the music has made.
