Playing the drums requires a basic sense of rhythm, combined with an appreciation of measure, and sensitivity to what other musicians are doing. The best practice? Playing along with your favorite recordings. Alan, the basic kit you outline is the classic drum set, and enough for some great drummers to get the job done. Double bass pedals and more tom toms (and a gong)? Unnecessary.

Alan wrote a great article but your comment is right. I played in a band many years ago and the drummer was never satisfied. While we were always saying him: “that’s fine!” he was trying to find new rhythms.

Sometimes a basic kit and very common rhythms can do the job much more than exotic styles. All you need is to put ear and feel and that is enough. We musicians don’t ask for more :)
