Modern abstract art is closely associated with abstract expressionism, a movement that emerged in post-World War II America and established New York as the epicenter of contemporary art. Coined by art critic Robert Coates in 1946, this art form emphasizes spontaneous, automatic, or subconscious creation. Through modern abstract art, artists express themselves using shape and color, without representing any actual objects.

Abstract expressionism is one of the first American artistic movements to gain global significance and was initially used to describe the work of artists such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Arshile Gorky. Modern abstract art can be divided into two categories: action painting, pioneered by artists like Pollock, de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Philip Guston; and color field painting, practiced by Mark Rothko and Kenneth Noland. While action painting focuses on the physical act of painting, color field painting is more concerned with exploring the effects of pure color on a canvas. Despite not adhering to traditional art rules, abstract expressionist paintings often share certain characteristics, such as the use of large canvases, emphasis on the canvas’s inherent flatness, and giving equal importance to the entire canvas area.

Although abstract expressionism lost its prominence by the 1960s, it influenced the development of other modern abstract styles like pop art and minimalism. Pop art emerged in the late 1950s in the UK and US, drawing inspiration from mass culture themes like advertising and comic books. Also known as neo-dada, this art form was pioneered by Marcel Duchamp. Minimalism, on the other hand, involves stripping an art form down to its most fundamental features.
