M. A. Everaux currently has two published titles, both of which are exceptional books: North Wolf and The Claiming of Moira Shine. In this brief article, I will be reviewing The Claiming of Moira Shine.

I first read North Wolf and thoroughly enjoyed it, so when Everaux’s subsequent title was released, I knew I had to give it a try. The blurb and excerpt I read initially did not appeal to me, as they seemed somewhat political and dry (I dislike politics in romance stories). However, since I enjoyed North Wolf, I decided to give it a chance.

It is worth noting that this novel contains a fair amount of violence, as well as romantic elements, so be prepared for some steamy scenes.

The Claiming of Moira Shine is a lengthy book set in a futuristic/alternate world where Earth is dying due to pollution and other factors. Aliens from another planet have invaded, and the remaining human inhabitants are being rounded up and sold into slavery to the Kinnians.

Moira is among the last to be captured and sent away. Initially destined for slavery, an incident with a guard who ends up dead leads to her being sentenced to death instead. Lord Marin, however, saves her from this fate, determined to make her his slave. Eventually, Moira tries to take her own life to escape.

This presents a dilemma for Lord Marin. Not only does he not understand why she would attempt suicide, but if word got out about Moira trying to kill herself, he could lose everything. He turns to Anath, an advisor to the King who has experience dealing with troublesome slaves. Anath initially refuses to help, but offers to take Moira and make the problem disappear for Marin. Marin reluctantly accepts this offer, fearing the loss of his reputation, and hands Moira over to Anath.

Instead of wanting Moira as a slave, Anath enlists her as a spy. This arrangement is more appealing to Moira, and she gratefully accepts her new espionage duties. She works as a kitchen slave, allowing her to move freely in places where Anath would be questioned.

Over time, the relationship between Moira and Anath develops. The characterizations in the story are outstanding. Although I am usually not a fan of political intrigue in romance novels, it is well integrated here and does not detract from the growing bond between Anath and Moira.

I give this book a 5-star rating. It is an excellent read.
