In this study we have applied the principles of conversation analysis (CA) in order to examine organization of topical talk that occurs in a group discussion task under assessment conditions. It has been noted that CA’s sociological lineage had affinities with two contemporary perspectives: Erving Goffman’s explorations of the interaction order of face-to-face communication, and the form of sociology developed by Garfinkel that is known as ethno methodology. The focus of ethno methodological inquiry is to describe the commonsense methods used in the very construction and maintenance of the natural, situated actions of the participants (Garfinkel 1967). The particular perspective CA takes in the analysis of talk-in-interaction is that analysis should not initially be constrained by prior theoretical assumptions (Hutchby and Wooffitt 1998: 23). Ten Have (1999) also emphasizes that CA’s ultimate purpose is to provide analytic descriptions of the organization of talk-in-action through taking a member’s perspective as from inside the system. In other words, ‘CA seeks to uncover the organization of talk not from any exterior, God’s eye view, but from the perspective of how the participants display for one another their understanding of “what is going on”‘. Consequently, both ethno methodology and conversation analysis require the researcher to make apparent the orderly properties of talk as oriented to the accomplishments of MBT Shoes On Sale participants or members rather than relying on predetermined categories and imposing them on the data.

Individual and Institution in the Modern Age

Societies are made up of individuals. In turn, individuals form small groups like the family: an important institution of society. Individuals also make other institutions like the state and the economy. These ‘thick institutions’ have separated themselves from the individuals. A strange situation arises in which individuals feels dominated by the very institutions they made in the early ages of human civilization. Individuals also feel alienated from those institutions which have become impersonal and very powerful. This problematic relationship between individuals and institutions has been studied by the social sciences in much detail especially in the works of 19th century scholars. In the 20th century, however, a strange thing happened with the study of institutions and individuals; they have separated themselves from each other and gone into different branches of social science. The economy is now the exclusive area of economists and politics have become the playground of politicians and political scientists. The study of individuals has become the most important reason for the existence of psychology. Only sociology and cultural anthropology have tried to preserve the linkages between individuals and society. But cultural anthropology has lost much interest in this relationship and has become a descriptive social science mainly studying primitive societies. Only sociology is still trying to study this relationship on a truly global scale: locally, nationally, and internationally.

There are two potential criminology careers for students to choose, the Bachelor of Arts criminology and the Bachelor of Science criminology. The Bachelor of Arts is the platform towards the criminology background related to the criminal justice agencies and causes of crimes. The areas they cover include the court system, juvenile delinquency and correctional facilities. In other words, they are more of the implementation side of the criminology. Students studying under the Bachelor of Arts will stand chances of getting jobs in the correction agencies or courts.
