The Evolution Of Fender Guitars

Since 1947, Fender Guitars has been producing exceptional instruments. Over the years, they have become synonymous with quality, innovation, and design. Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, the company’s history is a testament to American passion, ingenuity, manufacturing, and design.

Leo Fender, an electronics technician, founded Fender’s Radio Service in 1938. He repaired amplifiers, radios, and other electronic equipment. As a side business, he also sold records and provided PA systems for his customers to rent.

In the 1940s, Leo Fender and “Doc” Kauffman joined forces to establish K & F Manufacturing. They designed and sold electronic instruments and amplifiers, and they patented guitar pickups that were used in steel guitars. However, in 1946, Kauffman decided to part ways with the company, as he wasn’t convinced of its potential. Leo subsequently changed the company’s name to Fender Electric Instrument Company.

In 1948, Fender Electric Instrument Company introduced the “tweed amp.” It was an amplifier covered with tweed fabric on the front, hence the name “tweed amp.” Later on, the tweed was replaced with Tolex, and the cabinets started being produced in black. Chrome hardware was used, creating the iconic look that we know today.
