If you do any type of martial art you will need to be disciplined to train and compete in competitions the ultimate goal is to get your martial arts belts. The more advanced you are the higher ranking taekwondo belts you will have until you are a master. Although it may take some time to advance through the stages once you have it is a very proud moment. The belt system is the best way for teachers and instructors to grade your skills and acknowledge how well you are doing.

Although the martial art belts were originally thought to be only two colors over time they have extended to several different colors. In Japan they do tend to still use a white belt and then when the student graduates then a black belt is given. Although this is fine in the western world it is more common for different colors to be used. The colors of the taekwondo belts are traditionally white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, red and black.

Every martial art will have its own system as to the ranking of the martial arts belts and at the end of every stage you will need to take a test. This will test your skills and moves and ensure that you are ready and competent to move on to the next stage of your journey. These moves will either be done on your own or against an opponent and the instructor will decide if you are skilled enough. The higher up the ranks you go the darker the taekwondo belts are until you reach black.

Martial arts belts were not originally used and ancient instructors preferred sashes to represent the different stages. They felt the sashes were softer and easier to use but through the years belts were deemed to be comfortable and were introduced. The concept behind the taekwondo belts was to represent a journey for the student and as they pass through the stages they are becoming a man. You will need to be much focused to travel through the journey and slowly you will pass up through the ranks.

A white belt is for the beginners in the class and usually it is seen that a green martial arts belts is the intermediate stage in the journey. The introduction of the different taekwondo belts made teaching the classes easier for the instructors. They could see straight away where every student was up to in their journey. Although there are slight variations between different martial arts most of them are very similar and the martial arts belts can be seen in all classes.

As a student it will be your goal to achieve every stage in your journey and although this can be a challenge if you are focused then you will achieve your goals. You will learn how to focus your mind, body and soul and you will be fitter and more subtle. Learning any martial art is a great sport for any age and you will love the discipline and learning new skills every class.

Article by Art Jones

Art gallery owners who want to protect their investment at the same time they provide a more pleasant environment for their customers should investigate the benefits of portable air conditioning. A portable air conditioning unit enables artworks to be displayed in a climate controlled environment that eliminates the mold, mildew, bacteria, dirt and other pollution which can damage or cause deterioration to pieces of art.

Most artworks contain ingredients such as paints, wood frames and canvases which can be stressed by improper levels of temperature and humidity. Employing air conditioning units that are portable enables any gallery to perfectly regulate and monitor the temperature and humidity levels. Not only does this consistency help the art to maintain its quality but it also provides a comfortable environment for individuals visiting or working in the gallery. Having this system in place keeps the atmosphere at a comfortable temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit and a humidity level never exceeding 70 percent.

Among the many benefits of installing portable air conditioning into art galleries is its flexibility. The unit can be positioned wherever and whenever it is needed for temperature and humidity control. As the seasons change and outdoor weather conditions vary, the indoor gallery environment remains constant and protective of the artworks as well as the art patrons.

This style of climate control is also much more affordable than installing a permanent unit, which can involve considerable expense in addition to construction which can hamper gallery operation. By moving in a portable unit, there is no disruption to the display of art or visiting hours, and the energy efficient models available in today’s marketplace make these units economical to operate either on a daily or as-needed basis.

Even if the gallery has a permanent climate control system in place, a portable conditioner makes a good investment as a back up system should the permanent system fail. It can sometimes takes days or even weeks to effect repairs, and having a temporary climate control system ready to put into place assures that neither artworks nor clients will be adversely affected while repairs are being made.

An added bonus to using portable air conditioners in art galleries is the elimination of allergens and other pollutants in the air that can negatively affect the productivity of gallery employees. Current clients and prospective customers also appreciate being able to visit and inspect the gallery offerings in an allergen- and dust-free environment.

As a versatile and low-maintenance form of keeping the atmosphere climate-controlled and allergen-free, portable air conditioning systems make an excellent investment that protects the inventory at the same time, making the gallery visiting experience a pleasant one for the art patron.

Article by Art Gib

Starting with early cavemen scratching their etchings on mountain and cave walls, each culture and people have left reminders of who they were and what daily life was like by the art they left behind. Some cultures left their marks with their pottery, others with elaborate sculptures and fountains, what ever the era whatever the culture all leave their mark on the design and craftsmen of today. We are a conglomerate of what has passed before. It would be impossible to more forward with art without going backwards and see where we have been. Truly great artist take their cue from the masters of time past including the masters of nature.

Art schools all begin with studying the great who have left their footprints in the sand for all to appreciate and explore. Why do we all know the names of Van Gogh, Renoir, Michelangelo,
Matisse, Degas, Cezanne? Because they changed art forever. Study the past to make your mark on the future, that not only holds true for art but for other areas of study as well. We learn from the past and we move forward. How do we know about the Mayan cultures? The Incas? The Anastasia? It is through their artifacts that have been preserved and studied. How do we know about ancient Greece or Rome or Egypt? Through the buried artwork found in funeral burials and hidden chambers. We learn much about societies, cultures and people by their works of creative art.

What will be people say about our civilization by studying our art 500 years from now? We take stainless steel sheets, weathered wood, rusty car parts and clay and make beautiful sculptures, designs and artifacts that speak of an industrialized nation that still finds beauty and goodness in the things around us. We take these raw materials or machined materials and make things that will stand the test of time and taste and critics. We make functional art and we make impressionistic art that speaks of our day and our time and our challenges to those that will come hereafter.

From South American Inca burials sites, to an impressive Egyptian exhibit at the Louvre, I have seen art that speaks of people and cultures long since past but that are still alive and well in us as artist as we strive to make things of beauty and that connect with other humans both present and future.

Article by Art Gib

Art is defined as the product of human creativity. It’s a way for people to express themselves unlike any other. Verbal communication is a difficult form of expression for anyone which is why the various forms of art are a much better outlet for so many people today. The various types of arts are numerous and cannot be accounted for in this one short article. It’s astounding to think of how many different forms of art there are which can greatly help people to express their point of view in ways unlike many others.

The most common thoughts that come to mind when people talk about art is drawing in some form or another. There are people who paint and draw which is a great way to let out the creative juices. There are others who take a more physical approach which could include sculpture and carving. These options are used to make statues as well as nautical charts. All different forms of architecture are considered art as well as using electronic media such as computers and digital graphics. While these forms are more the classic types of art that many are aware of, there are still several other forms of art that many do not realize that they fit into the category of artistic.

Horticulture- the art of gardening is a beautiful form of art in which people design gardens in beautiful arrangements. The study of how plants mix together and formatting things to grow in various arrays is something that anyone can get involved with to express their creativity. Indeed, many have before and will again make a marvelous living by using their creative sensibilities to make a beautiful arrangement of some sort or another. Speaking of, florists are artists in their own rights as well. Arranging flowers together in bouquets and arrangements is not something that everyone can do and would most certainly be classified as artistic.

People also hire professional interior decorators to arrange and style their homes. This is yet another style of art and has been done time and time again in order to earn a living. The ability to mix and match things so that they reflect a beautiful theme is one that not everyone has and should definitely be added into the category of the arts. Another form of art is the expression of music in any form. Singing or playing instruments have both helped numerous people to express themselves and share their point of views in ways unlike any other. Indeed, there are many things that people have done and will continue to do which can be classified with the various types of arts.

Article by Union Art

Top Ten Tips for Buying Fine Art 1. Research. The first thing to do is some research on the internet to gain an idea of what kind of style of art you like. This is easy to do and free! Sign up to newsletters with online art galleries, you will then receive the latest art news and new releases in the art world. To get you started have a look at these useful websites: unionart.co.uk – This is a great website to have a look through as it sells all mediums of artwork with a range of styles and prices to suit any budget.fineart.co.uk – This is the website for The Fine Art Trade Guild. Here you will be able to find lots of useful information about art and framing.

2. Medium. You will need to think about the medium of the artwork: Open Edition Print, Limited Edition Print or Original. Here are the terms explained: Limited Edition Prints are extremely high quality, archival grade, prints. Nearly all Limited Edition Prints will be signed by the artist in pencil underneath the picture. The signature authenticates and guarantees each piece. The artist will only sign the print when they are completely satisfied that it is a true and accurate representation of the original. Signed Limited Edition Prints will often attract higher prices than unsigned work. Limited Edition Prints will be numbered. The handwritten number is vital as it guarantees not only the issue number of the limited number available, but also the authenticity of the edition. Open Edition Prints are high quality, archival grade, prints but unlike Limited Edition Prints they are not normally signed by the artist or limited in the number of prints produced. Purchasing an Open Edition Print is a great affordable introduction into buying art.Originals can vary in medium but some of the more popular mediums are oil, watercolour and acrylic. These will be more expensive than open or limited edition prints but you are buying a one off created by the artists very own hand. If you are looking for an investment an original would be the better way to go.

3. Budget. Look at your finances and make a decision on how much the budget for the new piece of artwork will be. You don’t need a large budget to start an art collection. You may not have the budget to buy an original at the moment but there are other ways to build your collection. Think about why you are buying the artwork: is it to decorate a room, for investment, to be admired by those around you or because you want to start collecting art. This will help you decide on your budget.

4. View. Prepare a list of galleries in your local area that supply the style of artwork you like. Also have a look to see if there are any art fairs on, it may be worth travelling further afield, as they can be an excellent way to get involved in the art scene. The Affordable Art Fair, on twice a year in Bristol and London, is a great one to visit.

5. Discuss. While in the art galleries and/or art fairs don’t be afraid to ask questions, ask as many as you can. Artists will be delighted in your interest and gallery staff and owners will be happy to share their knowledge and experience especially if they think it may result in a sale!

6. Framing. Will the artwork need framing? The answer is more than likely going to be yes unless you wish to buy a box canvas although even then adding a frame can really complete the piece. Framing is not cheap but can have a big impact on the finished article. Choose a frame that complements the style, era, price and colours of the artwork. Let a reputable framers help guide you through this process; with years of experience they will normally be right. The gallery or artist can also give you their opinion of how they would frame the piece. You might want to go with the artists recommended frame as after all the original vision of producing the art came from them!

7. Love. The most important thing of all is that you have to love it! Buying art can and should be an emotional decision. Only buy it if you LOVE it! Have a think about it, when you walk away do you find the artwork keeps returning to your thoughts? Will you regret not buying it? Ask yourself these questions and the decision should be clear. Don’t leave it too long before you make this decision or you could find someone else has come along and snapped it up before you!

8. Research, again. Now you have decided on the style, artist and piece depending on whether it’s a print or original have a look online. Online art galleries will nearly always be cheaper than physical galleries. Online galleries do not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar art gallery so they can generally pass those savings on to the consumer.

9. Details. Before you buy that piece of artwork you absolutely love ask the gallery or artist some questions, for example: If you are buying a Limited Edition Print is the piece signed and numbered by the artist? Does the print come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA)? The answer to both of these questions should be ‘yes’. If you are buying an Original is the piece signed by the artist? The answer to this again should be ‘yes’. Any artwork you buy should also include a receipt with your name and address, the artist name, artwork title and price. Keep hold of your receipt as not only can this be used for insurance valuations it will also provide provenance should you decide to sell it in the future.

10. Buy. Buy that piece of artwork! Once you have got your treasured piece of artwork home make sure it’s protected from any potential damage. Ideally don’t hang the piece in direct sunlight as this will result in the colours fading. Varying temperatures could also have an effect on the artwork, along with humid conditions like bathrooms and kitchens. Hang the artwork so that the centre is eye level.

Article by Zoe Phoenix

By now, you probably have hundreds of photos stored in your computer — none of which have been printed yet. If you want a fast portrait or design image for a canvas art printing project, all you need to do is choose the picture or pictures you want to see enlarged, and open your Photoshop or Picasa program to easily turn your digital image into instant art.

Art on canvas

Canvas is closely associated with visual art. Canvas artworks can serve as instant accents at home or in office spaces. But artworks nowadays, especially the classic ones come, with a hefty price. The good news is that modern times have also given modern-slash-novel ways to come up with your own masterpieces using your own creative genius (with reinforcement), and these are made possible by digital canvas art printing.

A few clicks on your mouse using common image editing programs like Photoshop CS3 and Picasa are enough to help you come up with prints you only used to see in magazines, books and museums. Now, you can engage in a project and see results you would be proud enough to print and hang.

Quick Effects

Lined up below are some tricks you can use in for your canvas print.

From Photoshop, open the image file you need and then go to the ‘Filter’ menu drop down list and pick the effect. In Picasa, the image files in your computer are automatically collected so you can simply browse through the program’s image library. 1. Artistic

Photoshop has loads of options for this one. You can convert your digital photo into a watercolor artwork or one that looks like a colored pencil or palette knife creation. Sketches are also a handy category as it comes with charcoal effects, among others, to give a nice play of shadow and light in the image.

2. Distorted

The degree of distortion to be done on the image can be adjusted so the image becomes artistically manipulated and not damaged-looking. Among the distortion functions are ‘glass’ and ‘ocean ripple’.

3. Texture

Photoshop also lets you play with the illusion of texture with the use of the ‘texturizer’, ‘rough pastels’ and ‘water paper’.

4. Color

Photoshop offers more options than Picasa in terms of more complex alterations like ‘glowing edges’ and ‘neon glow’. However, the latter has easy steps to convert colored images to sepia or black and white. Picasa also has a feature called ‘focal B&W’ that lets you highlight a specific portion of an image by changing the color of the whole picture to black and white, while retaining the original color of that portion.

5. Soften

There are a number of blurring options to create a soft and old effect like Photoshop’s ‘radial blur’ which makes the image hazy in a circular direction, and Picasa’s ‘soft focus’ which gives the image a vintage look.

If you can’t decide on which image to print, you can make a collage. Picasa, specifically, offers a really neat and easy way to create this. Just add the pictures you want to include on the canvas print and then choose the collage format that suits your taste. You can go for mosaic, contact prints, or even a group of pictures just randomly piled. You have the option to use full-bleed, white-bordered or Polaroid-looking pictures.

Try experimenting with these different effects and make sure that you save your file in jpeg, eps, tiff or pdf format before sending the images for canvas art printing.

Some of mma’s biggest characters on display. The crazy black guy is Charles Bennett. The giant guy is Giant Silva and the guy he’s having the stare down with is Naoya Ogawa. The guy giving the finger is Wes Sims against Frank Mir. If anyone happens to know the name of this song please let me know so I can put it in the description cause I have had no luck finding the artist name off the youtube list of songs allowed for use.

Article by John Madsen

It’s no secret that any sizeable arts and crafts project needs a lot of preparation. There are plans to find (or create!), materials to buy or gather together, and then – maybe most importantly – there’s finding the time to actually sit down and get to work. Most hobbyists will tell you, time budgeting is probably the hardest part of getting ready to create.

This is a shame, because you can’t shoehorn the creative process into a given timeslot. Creativity – the combination of mental and spiritual processes in which the mind and subconscious interact to express each other – works at its own pace and takes it time. If you’ve ever heard the old clich about an artist can’t rush his work, consider your own creative process and how it operates for you.

Getting yourself mentally prepared to create

There’s no way to rewire your brain for creativity, but you get the process warmed up by taking steps to make sure your creative “river” has a smooth channel in which to run.

First, make sure you have enough time to do what you want, without interruptions. The time of day isn’t important, but take steps to make sure you don’t have anything preoccupying your thoughts. When your mind is preoccupied, even a part of it, you can lose focus on creating, making the work you do less than your best effort.

This advice might seem like telling you to save your arts and crafts project for last on your list of daily or weekly priorities. In fact, it’s just the opposite: creativity works best when you’ve got everything else out of the way. Save the best for last when you set your priorities.

Getting Your Materials Ready

Getting your arts and crafts project going is sometimes like taking a trip in a car. Some people prefer to take only the bare necessities with them, picking up what they need as they go along. Others like to pack heavy, preparing for all possibilities while keeping a ready supply of emergency materials close at hand. You may like to have all your supplies with you and organized beforehand. You may also prefer to just get going and get any additional materials you need later.

But with regards to the creative process, you’ll probably find you work better, that you’re more creative, if you get all your supplies and materials ready before you begin. When you’re fully equipped, there’s no need to take a break or stop – interrupting that creative process – because you’re missing that one crucial element that will put your project over the top.

Start when you want, stop when you must.

Stop working on your project only when you feel comfortable putting it down for a while. Don’t neglect your other responsibilities, but give yourself the freedom of following your creative spirit through to either its conclusion or a natural breaking point. When you come back to work on it again, you’ll likely find you can pick up exactly where you started. Good luck!

Article by Rev Michael Bresciani

What you see on the screen plays second fiddle to the message a movie puts forth. What you see is what you get is not all you get. So, what else do you get?

The whole country is talking about the film Brokeback Mountain and it has created no small stir. On a Sunday morning TV editorial Charles Osgood pointed out that Hollywood is not tying to put forth a gay liberal agenda but rather are interested only in the bottom line – money. Although not inferred, it sounded like capturing the minds of adults or poisoning the minds of our youth was merely an incidental that happened on the way to the bank.

For over thirty years I have warned that it is not just what we see on films that can influence us. Each film has a philosophy attached to it whether it was intended or not. Sex, violence and profanity are blaringly obvious but subtle philosophies are not. Today the philosophies are becoming more blatant and are far less subtle. The race for box office cash is not all that fuels this raw open ended kind of expression in the film industry.

The mention of any kind of control (even self control) is met with cries of violated first amendment rights and the old freedom of expression hype. It may seem a bit over used but remains true nevertheless that Hollywood has never bothered to discern the difference between freedom and license.

A recent poll discovered that only one out of a thousand Americans knows all of the rights our constitution provides for them. On average the poll said that most people can name only one of our constitutional rights. Contrasted with that fact, it was discovered that the same people could name three or more of the characters in the TV animated sitcom, “The Simpsons.” The bottom line says that movie makers know what their rights are but the movie viewing public either doesn’t have a clue or they just don’t care.

Anyone who thinks TV and Movies don’t influence our society has to be living in another country. Yet even that is not true. Another poll recently discovered that one of the reasons that almost every major country in the world hates Americans is because of the film industry. All they know about America is what they see in the movies. Immorality, frivolous romance, rebellion, crime, gay cowboys and general mayhem is all they see. Any country trying to keep order and develop would naturally reject this kind of example and that is exactly what they do.

Could we get Hollywood’s attention on this, not so far but maybe we could catch them on the way to the bank and let them know. It is estimated that Americans will spend fifteen years on average of their entire lives watching TV and Movies. Perhaps it is not reasonable to think John Q television watching public is going to take any time out of their fifteen years to grab a few Hollywood producers on their way to the bank. Maybe they could protest a bit during the commercials which comprise about five of the fifteen years of their TV and movie watching lives.

Actors and others in the film industry are paid huge sums of money to do and say things most Americans don’t believe should ever be seen or uttered. Are they showing us our mind, or is art coaxing life rather than imitating it. I suppose when actors or thespians are offered small fortunes to behave and talk badly they must think they are living right. They too probably laugh all the way to the bank. Most Americans don’t act like actors but Hollywood can afford to make them act anyway they choose.

It all seems Ok if the end (the trip to the bank) seems to justify the means. Some Americans are a bit sick of Hollywood suggesting how to live instead of depicting how they actually live. The Bible isn’t sick of anything but has a lot to say about how sick human behavior can become. Perhaps it is best said by the bible regardless of whether Hollywood is listening or not. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12
