Starting with early cavemen scratching their etchings on mountain and cave walls, each culture and people have left reminders of who they were and what daily life was like by the art they left behind. Some cultures left their marks with their pottery, others with elaborate sculptures and fountains, what ever the era whatever the culture all leave their mark on the design and craftsmen of today. We are a conglomerate of what has passed before. It would be impossible to more forward with art without going backwards and see where we have been. Truly great artist take their cue from the masters of time past including the masters of nature.

Art schools all begin with studying the great who have left their footprints in the sand for all to appreciate and explore. Why do we all know the names of Van Gogh, Renoir, Michelangelo,
Matisse, Degas, Cezanne? Because they changed art forever. Study the past to make your mark on the future, that not only holds true for art but for other areas of study as well. We learn from the past and we move forward. How do we know about the Mayan cultures? The Incas? The Anastasia? It is through their artifacts that have been preserved and studied. How do we know about ancient Greece or Rome or Egypt? Through the buried artwork found in funeral burials and hidden chambers. We learn much about societies, cultures and people by their works of creative art.

What will be people say about our civilization by studying our art 500 years from now? We take stainless steel sheets, weathered wood, rusty car parts and clay and make beautiful sculptures, designs and artifacts that speak of an industrialized nation that still finds beauty and goodness in the things around us. We take these raw materials or machined materials and make things that will stand the test of time and taste and critics. We make functional art and we make impressionistic art that speaks of our day and our time and our challenges to those that will come hereafter.

From South American Inca burials sites, to an impressive Egyptian exhibit at the Louvre, I have seen art that speaks of people and cultures long since past but that are still alive and well in us as artist as we strive to make things of beauty and that connect with other humans both present and future.

When the Martial Arts expert landing flat on his back is only the beginning of the “disaster”. You know you are in for a fashion show like no other.

Arranging flowers together in bouquets and arrangements is not something that everyone can do and would most certainly be classified as artistic.

People also hire professional interior decorators to arrange and style their homes. This is yet another style of art and has been done time and time again in order to earn a living. The ability to mix and match things so that they reflect a beautiful theme is one that not everyone has and should definitely be added into the category of the arts. Another form of art is the expression of music in any form. Singing or playing instruments have both helped numerous people to express themselves and share their point of views in ways unlike any other. Indeed, there are many things that people have done and will continue to do which can be classified with the various types of arts.

It’s no secret that any sizeable arts and crafts project needs a lot of preparation. There are plans to find (or create!), materials to buy or gather together, and then – maybe most importantly – there’s finding the time to actually sit down and get to work. Most hobbyists will tell you, time budgeting is probably the hardest part of getting ready to create.

This is a shame, because you can’t shoehorn the creative process into a given timeslot. Creativity – the combination of mental and spiritual processes in which the mind and subconscious interact to express each other – works at its own pace and takes it time. If you’ve ever heard the old clich about an artist can’t rush his work, consider your own creative process and how it operates for you.

Getting yourself mentally prepared to create

There’s no way to rewire your brain for creativity, but you get the process warmed up by taking steps to make sure your creative “river” has a smooth channel in which to run.

First, make sure you have enough time to do what you want, without interruptions. The time of day isn’t important, but take steps to make sure you don’t have anything preoccupying your thoughts. When your mind is preoccupied, even a part of it, you can lose focus on creating, making the work you do less than your best effort.

This advice might seem like telling you to save your arts and crafts project for last on your list of daily or weekly priorities. In fact, it’s just the opposite: creativity works best when you’ve got everything else out of the way. Save the best for last when you set your priorities.

Getting Your Materials Ready

Getting your arts and crafts project going is sometimes like taking a trip in a car. Some people prefer to take only the bare necessities with them, picking up what they need as they go along. Others like to pack heavy, preparing for all possibilities while keeping a ready supply of emergency materials close at hand. You may like to have all your supplies with you and organized beforehand. You may also prefer to just get going and get any additional materials you need later.

But with regards to the creative process, you’ll probably find you work better, that you’re more creative, if you get all your supplies and materials ready before you begin. When you’re fully equipped, there’s no need to take a break or stop – interrupting that creative process – because you’re missing that one crucial element that will put your project over the top.

Start when you want, stop when you must.

Stop working on your project only when you feel comfortable putting it down for a while. Don’t neglect your other responsibilities, but give yourself the freedom of following your creative spirit through to either its conclusion or a natural breaking point. When you come back to work on it again, you’ll likely find you can pick up exactly where you started. Good luck!

How can a picture postcard, handcrafted North Carolina community fit so much into one day? To find out, attend the free Overlook Brasstown Music and Arts Fest, coming alive on Saturday, June 27.

Overlook Brasstown is the sister community to Overlook Martins Creek.

This first-ever family event will run from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Jason Mason Road, about three miles from the world famous John Campbell Folk School.

Event coordinator Jamie Keener said, “This family-style fun day will feature not only incredible food, live music by the fabulous Barker Bothers and breathtaking work by local artists and crafters, but by artisans from as far away as Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia.

“There are no vendor entry fees. Generous donations from local and area businesses that recognize the value of the arts in our busy lives will help defer expenses,” Keener continued.

Classifications include painting, jewelry, photography, wood carving, small furniture, pottery, scrimshaw, gourd art and glass art.

Arts Fest committee officials have named art glass creator David Goldhagen honored guest; he will display his world-renowned works. His genius – from small scale sculptured glass to tables, candlesticks, Menorahs and ornamental glass – is shown in many private collections as well as in corporate collections, museums and foundations.

Goldhagen said, “This first-of-a-kind event is most exciting and surely portends more festivals in the years ahead. I feel fortunate to be included in this initial Fest, and am especially delighted to know the recipients of the day will be Cherokee and Clay County Food Banks.”

Area developer Blake Twedt, creator of Overlook Brasstown, conceived the idea of a Music and Arts Fest in support of his devotion to the ecology of the land, and in order to return to nature some of what the community has been given.

As Twedt said, “Local businesses and arts-interested residents have caught hold of the vision to launch this day-long homage to artists, musicians and craftsmen of this area and beyond.

Proceeds from this inaugural Music and Arts Fest will be primarily donated to Cherokee and Clay Counties’ Food Banks as well as other charities. Since admittance to the Fest is free, visitors are urged to bring some extra canned goods from their grocery list as a donation. Ingle’s Food Store also is cooperating as a collection point.

Mixed Martial Arts is essentially an unarmed combat sport, often described as no-holds-barred combat sport. Not just that, the winner of the first UFC was Royce Gracie of the Gracie family. The sport is largely developed in Brazil, the US, and Japan as compared to other nations. Traditionally, the MMA fighters were trained in one or more of the martial art sport like Muay Thai Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or any other. Nowadays, the students get trained specifically for MMA irrespective of their previous martial arts training, under the guidance of professional trainers.

There are a number of professional training schools all over United States, including in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. area that provide specialized training to be a refined MMA athlete.
