Cajon Drum

Cajon drums are a type of percussion instrument that have been traditionally crafted from wood. However, in the past, Cajon drums were shaped like simple boxes, small drawers from dressers or crates used for fish. The term “Cajon” comes from the Spanish language and when translated, it means “box.” Over time, the Cajon drum was redesigned to look as it does today, a six-sided wooden box with a hole on one side, usually on the back. The wood used on five of the panels in Cajon drums is typically made from 3/4 inch wood, such as white wood or pine wood. The last side of the Cajon drum box is made from plywood.

The Cajon drum has a history that can be traced back to central and West African slaves from Peru, as well as certain parts of Cuba.
