Photo by hcplebranchJazz is a bit of a weird thing to define. Even the origins of the word are murky. It seems to have stemmed from baseball magazines in the early twentieth century, when it had nothing to do with music. Anyway, what we tend to know it as today is either a slightly alienating collection of weird sounds, or that irritatingly smooth and smug crooning that mafia sponsored legends made so popular in the fifties. But that’s not a fair depiction of jazz at all.

The origins of it come from black American culture. When people were at their most oppressed, working as slaves in colonial plantations and farms, they sang during their labour, and sang in praise of god in their free time. Gospel was a powerful force of collecting peoples’ spirits. From this came blues, and its rich, heartbreaking tones of dissatisfaction, coupled with new, cool-sounding scales and repetitive riffs.

In the early nineteenth century black composer Scott Joplin brought a new sound to New Orleans. He wrote a collection of popular street music that swept across America with its happy tunes and echoing lyrics that encouraged audience participation. It was perfect for an America that wanted to dance, and enjoy the more illicit side of life in brothels and bars while feeling part of something innocent and fun. This type of ‘jazz’ music spread, until by the thirties it was the mainstay of dance halls in the big cities of the north. This meant it was a big part of illegal drinking houses too, as these were the prohibition years.

Bollywood is located in Bombay, India and it’s the place where some of the most popular Indian movies are made. In fact, India is not only famous for making quality movies, but also for releasing the highest amount of films each year.

Bollywood movies stand out of the crowd of all the Hollywood clichs firstly because they promote completely different things. Namely, Indian movies are represented as a combined product of both local and western elements of culture and civilization. The result is an interesting storyline underlined by traditional colors and specificities that irremediably entice and seduce the audience who are interested in Indian culture and tradition.

The first thing you notice at Hindi movies is the unique music, represented in interesting choreographies that reveal the human body’s grace and shapes. Lately, they started to include occidental tunes and genres like Salsa or Jazz, but the mixture only brings to surface the power and charm of Indian music. The final product is a mixture of elements from various cultures, but the audience is still able to learn more about the Indian culture and rituals.

It’s unfortunate however because I really want a hover board and a flying car but I just don’t see that happening in the next four years.

Of course, even if they did invent flying cars, they wouldn’t legalize them, but that’s neither here nor there.
