DW Drums are renowned for a reason: the sound. Drum Workshop, commonly known as DW, is a globally recognized drum manufacturing company. It was founded by Don Lombardi, a 26-year-old drummer, in his studio in Santa Monica, CA. Initially offering lessons, Don named his studio the Drum Workshop and eventually expanded to selling books, drum sets, and drum sticks. At the age of 17, John Good, a student, joined Don to assist with product sales.
Together, John and Don constantly brainstormed ways to improve the sound of their drum equipment. They discovered a shared passion and Don created an adjustable trap case seat, which became DW Drums’ first product. Although it achieved only moderate success, it paved the way for further advancements in drumming products.
In 1977, Tom Beckman, the owner of Camco Drum Company and also Don’s student’s father, expressed his interest in selling his business. Don, with financial assistance from external investors and his parents, acquired the machinery, tools, and molds. DW began producing and rebranding Camco’s 5000 bass drum pedal under the new Drum Workshop name.
