Learning About Mixed Media For Better Understanding

Mixed media refers to a form of graphic art that combines different and often distinct art media. It involves the use of two or more artistic mediums, such as ink and pastel or painting and collage, blended together in a single composition.

This approach allows artists to incorporate multiple ideas and materials onto a canvas, resulting in visually striking works without limitations. Mixed media is not a trend exclusive to the 20th century; although artists in previous centuries were less experimental, they also combined various mediums in their works. For example, gold leaf was often used in religious art, Leonardo da Vinci combined pastels with other drawing media, William Blake applied watercolor washes to his images, and Edgar Degas merged pastels with charcoal and printing inks.

It is important not to confuse mixed media with multimedia art. Multimedia art encompasses a broader range, incorporating visual art with non-visual elements such as recorded sound and elements from other art forms like literature, drama, dance, motion pictures, sound, or interactivity.
