The history of exotic drums can be traced back to ancient times when animals and early humans used them to create rhythms by beating on logs and trees for various purposes such as warnings and music. These sounds have been utilized to start and end wars, at sports events, and in musical concerts, and the type of drum used often depends on the setting or occasion.

Originally, Macaque monkeys used drumming sounds to establish their dominance. Humans adopted this practice for both celebration and as a means of communication to alert others of potential attacks by rival tribes. Over the years, this fundamental beat has found numerous uses. While it is considered one of the foundational instruments, it is not necessarily easy to play proficiently.

In ancient China, military forces used drums to motivate troops to march in unison and set the pace of the march. They also developed codes using drum beats to issue commands, making them effective for long-distance communication. This practice was adopted by various military commanders throughout history, and the drum is often depicted alongside troops as they march.
