The history of drums dates back to at least 6000 BC, making it one of the oldest known musical instruments. Drums are classified as membranophones and create sound when struck with an object. The sound is produced by the vibration of the membrane stretched over the drum.
Drum kits, consisting of multiple drums and cymbals of different tones, were initially used in marching and parade bands. Double drumming, or playing multiple drums simultaneously, became popular in the early days of drumming. In the 1930s, the modern drum kit emerged, consisting of a bass drum, snare, tom toms, a hi-hat cymbal, and large hanging cymbals.
In the 1960s, rock drummers began expanding the standard drum kit by adding extra bass drums and more cymbals. Electric drums were also developed, which led to the creation of contemporary synthesized drum beats used in many songs today.
There are many famous drummers, including Ringo Starr, Neil Peart, and John Bonham, who are regarded as legends in the drumming world.
