How Headphones Changed the World

Before the invention of amplifiers, headphones were the sole means of listening to electrical audio signals. How have headphones changed the world? In 1895, the electrophone was invented, allowing users to listen to the local opera house’s music. It rested on the ear and weighed more than ten pounds. Nathaniel Baldwin created the first modern headphones in 1910. He crafted a set in his kitchen and started selling them to the United States Navy. Baldwin, a former electrician and air compressor operator, experimented with sound amplification through compressed air, leading to the first headphones.

In the 1920s, Brandes headphones were manufactured for radio work. Initially, headphones were quite uncomfortable, made from moving iron drivers, and produced a clamping effect on the head. Early radio headphones also exposed users to dangerously high voltages.
