Article by Kenneth Echie

Gerontology is a field that specializes in the study of the social, biological and psychological aspects of elderly people. By researching aging process of the elderly, gerontology can incorporate better rules and regulations to provide the elderly with a better quality of life.

Gerontologists are trained and licensed health care professionals who work with elderly people. They are equipped to analyze all aspects of aging individuals with the exception of disease and sickness. These healthcare professionals generally work in many different settings where aging individuals can be found. Nursing homes, hospitals, and other settings are where gerontology is practiced.

Gerontologists are required to educate and inform the older population by giving speeches, presentations and by providing resources such as writing books, articles and other literature that will increase the knowledge of the elderly individuals. People who pursue a career in this field will have a love of communication and be able to communicate effectively. He or she must be dedicated about the wellbeing of the older population.

There are many different kinds of gerontologists. There is the research gerontologist that researches and analyzes how the aging process affects people in different type of settings. They then use their findings as a means to understand and to enhance the lives of the senior citizens. Those in applied gerontology interact with the older people by communicating and providing assistance to them, their families and anyone they interact with on a daily basis.

In the area of administration, there are administrative gerontologists who are trained to provide management skills by creating programs and services that will be beneficial to the elderly. They help to keep the programs that are already in place running properly.

Gerontologists can have a degree in any related field. A degree in psychology, nursing, sociology, teaching and any other socially related degree can be used to enter this career.

Work Environment:

Gerontologists are able to work in many different types of employment places including nursing facilities, assisted living centers, hospitals, and health offices. They can also teach at schools and colleges and even with other professionals in the health industry to provide a better quality of life for the elderly.

Education:

For those who are interested in pursuing this career will need to take coursework in biology, geometry, algebra, and chemistry while in high school. Bonus courses would be English, psychology and any course that will better prepare you for making the transition from high school to college with a specialization in gerontology.

College Requirements:

A career as a gerontologist requires a high diploma or a GED. Training requires college and university coursework in any field that relates to sociology. A completion of a Bachelors and even a Masters degree is needed to become a gerontologist. Before becoming a licensed and practicing gerontologist a clinical internship may also be required. Requirements do vary according to which discipline of gerontology you are majoring in; it is best to check with your school to make sure you are fulfilling the requirements necessary for your career.

Documentary on the “nature of today’s prejudices.” Follows two men (equal in all measurable aspects, except skin color) as they particpate in a variety of “everyday” life interactions and situations to test levels of prejudice based on skin colors. Shows how two young men in St. Louis, one white, one black, but otherwise similar in background, appearance, etc., are treated differently in various situations as they go about shopping, applying for work, and looking for rental housing. In the 1960s, black Americans were promised that this country would not judge people by the color of the their skin. Three decades later, this video investigates situations in which blacks and whites continue to be treated differently. Video raises the question of the relation between discrimination in everyday social exchanges and what sociology calls “structural racism,” the systematic exclusion of people of color from full access to social resources. Where does this program root the problem? In the individual bias of a few people? Or are individuals expressions of a society based on white privilege? Does everyone who identifies as white have a stake in upholding the racial hierarchy with its tendency for white preferential treatment? On the other hand, what responsibility do European Americans have for eliminating or helping to eliminate racial preference? How would some of the problems indicated in the film be addressed or remedied? Descript’n 1 videocassette (19 min.) : sd., col. ; 1/2 in …

Book Review – Outliers: The Story of Successby Dr. Farid A. MunaOutliers: The Story of SuccessBy Malcolm GladwellLittle, Brown and Company, November 2008.Malcolm Gladwell is the bestselling author of The Tipping Point and Blink. His latest book, Outliers, has been on the best seller list of The New York Times for eight straight months, since it was published in November 2008. Gladwell’s engaging and journalistic writing style and his talent for simplifying complex issues, I believe, are his secrets of success. And these are the reasons why his books are both controversial and popular. His latest book is no exception.Outliers attempts to explain the secrets of successful people; it proposes that intelligence (IQ) alone is not a guarantee of success in life. However, this view is an already well-known fact that has been established during the early 1990s by a host of academic studies which discovered that success indeed requires additional competencies, known as emotional intelligence (EI). Unfortunately, Gladwell does not expound on, or even refer to, the growing body of literature on EI.Instead, Gladwell focuses on several other significant and equally important ingredients of success. In fact, his book naturally complements the EI studies and explains the “secrets” of success from a different perspective: by taking into account the personal, environmental, and cultural contexts of success. In this book review, I will highlight the main secrets of success covered by Outliers starting with the advantage (or luck) of being born at the right time of the year. One example Gladwell highlights is that of Canadian hockey players and Czech soccer and hockey players who are born during the first six months of a year and have a distinct advantage of age and maturity over their teammates. This is due to the eligibility cutoff age of January 1 in those countries. As Gladwell explains, “A boy who turns ten on January 2, then, could be playing alongside someone who doesn’t turn ten until the end of the year – and at that age, in preadolescence, a twelve-month gap in age represents an enormous difference in physical maturity”.What about the year of birth? That, too, explains the implications of being there at the right time, at the right age. Gladwell cites the Silicon Valley tycoons who were born between 1953 and 1956 and were thus at the perfect age in 1975 to take advantage of the personal computer revolution. Here are the names and years of birth of some of these successful men: Paul Allen (1953), Bill Joy (1954), Scott McNealy (1954), Steve Jobs (1955), Eric Schmidt (1955), Bill Gates (1955), and Steve Ballmer (1956). Gladwell later argues that New York lawyers born in the early 1930s also had a tremendous advantage when the boom in the number and size of corporate mergers, hostile takeovers, and litigation took place during the 1970s, mainly due to the relaxation of Federal regulations.Gladwell proposes that it is the “10,000-hour rule” of hard work and practice which explains why many people achieved success. He provides examples of Bill Joy’s contributions to UNIX, Java, and the Internet; Mozart’s masterwork was composed when he was twenty-one, although he started writing music at the age of six; the Beatles and their Hamburg experience of playing music eight hours a day, seven days a week between 1960 and 1962; and Bill Gates who put in thousands of hours of computer programming starting at the age of thirteen. In addition to being smart, these people achieved success by putting in 10,000 hours of practice before becoming outstanding at what they did.Two other “secrets” are discussed at length in Outliers: culture and education. Gladwell compares the safety record of airliners in the 1990s, and notes that the Colombian captains (Avianca) and Korean captains (Korean Air) in certain cases could have averted plane crashes if their cultures permitted subordinates (copilots and flight engineers) to speak out and warn the captains of impending disasters. These two cultures place a high value on power distance, meaning that subordinates defer to their superiors even when these superiors may in fact be in the wrong. In brief, subordinates were reluctant to speak out because of fear and/or respect; a very dangerous cultural “dimension” when one is flying a passenger plane! In effect, Gladwell argues that it does matter where you were born and what culture you were raised in.Citing culture again, Gladwell attributes the high scores on mathematics tests in countries such as China, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan to the strong work ethics and the demanding nature in those countries of the all important wet-rice agriculture. Here again, Gladwell fails to mention that rice is also grown in other countries, such as Philippines and Indonesia, whose populations are not necessarily known for high scores on math tests. Gladwell also does not mention the Protestant ethics of hard work which may have contributed to the rise of capitalism and the industrial revolution, or the fact that growing tobacco used to be as demanding as working in the rice paddies. Finally, Gladwell links the quality of education to success. He cites the longer days and hours of high schools in Japan and South Korea, “the school year in the United States is, on average, 180 days long. The South Korean school year is 220 days long. The Japanese school year is 243 days long”. Finally, Gladwell mentions the vast advantages and opportunities provided by KIPP Academy middle schools which were started in the South Bronx, one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. Students at KIPP excel at mathematics and reading, and a large percentage of them go on to university and “in many cases being the first in their family to do so”. KIPP school days start at seven twenty-five and goes on until five p.m. All students take classes in thinking skills, English, science, mathematics, social science, music and orchestra. KIPP gives its students a chance to work very hard and to excel.Although it is written with a journalistic, rather than academic approach, Outliers has undoubtedly contributed to the ongoing thinking about success in the corporate world. It highlights the importance of hard work, determination, opportunity and luck, family upbringing, personal circumstances, and culture.Despite its shortcomings, mainly its lack of academic rigor, Outliers is a highly recommended book for those who want to explore the “secrets” of success, beyond IQ and EI.

Wisdom Of The Mountains: A Seminar On Tibetan Buddhism In this dynamic series of lectures recorded in 1965 and 1969, Alan Watts joyfully takes us on an exploration of Buddhism, from its roots in India over 2500 years ago to the explosion of interest in Zen and the Tibetan tradition in the West. These lectures have been transcribed and edited by the author’s son, Mark Watts, who also provides an introduction that sets them in their historical context. This book then begins with Journey From India, which presents a brief explanation of the Indian worldview and cosmology followed by a discussion of the important differences between Hinduism and Buddhism. The Middle Way offers an insight into the radical methods of the Mahayana, or “great vehicle,” and reviews the basic Buddhist terms and teaching, including the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Alan Watts then turns his attention to Zen and Tibetan Buddhism in the remaining four chapters. In Religion of No-Religion he discusses how the Buddha taught the method of awakening through the experience of no-self, no-concept, and no-religion. This technique of short-circuiting the mind is seen today in the method of instruction centered upon Zen koans. In contrast to the intellectual methods of Zen, the Tibetan, or Vajrayana school, retained much more of the original Indian flavor of Mahayana Buddhism, and in Wisdom of the Mountains Watts provides an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism by explaining its unique practices.
A number of different formats and structures are introduced in the world of research papers so that the writers adopt every style according to the demand of the field that they are choosing to write about.

The ASA (American Sociological Association) format provides an authentic platform to the writers that are aiming to write for Sociological journals. There are specific formats available for every field that offers a room for researchers to write about it. Be it a medical paper or engineering research, a business related research or a literature based paper, every field has its own demands and rules about how to write on it. The ASA style guides the authors to write a presentable paper in the field of sociology using this particular format.

The ASA style enforces the usage of bibliographic format for the research conducted in the area of sociology in order to make the communication easier and clear. It gives the writers a clear picture about how to approach their research and helps them escape the nightmare of plagiarism.

There are a certain rules that the writer is expected to follow while writing a paper in ASA style. He should utilize a word processor, always use double spaces, the title page should be isolated from the rest and must be the starting page of your research paper. You are allowed to write an abstract for your paper on a separate sheet as well describing what your paper is focusing on and in what manner you are going to play along. It is worthwhile to observe about the fact that the starting of your text should not be followed by an

Article by Jason Creation

If you’re coming to the end of your second year as an undergraduate, you have probably started to think about the kind of topics you might want to look at for your thesis.

What topics you choose will, of course, depend on what you’re majoring in, what aspect of the main part of your studies has interested you the most, and if you are like many other students, the topic that won’t require too much work. Try not to think of your thesis as just another assignment, your thesis is important in terms of your final degree results and therefore deserves special attention.

* Topics in Sociology*

If you’re a sociology or cultural studies major, you will be looking at topics in that area. Many sociology students opt to undertake a research project for their dissertation, while others prefer the theoretical side of the discipline. What topic you choose will depend on whether you prefer to argue about the philosophical underpinnings of sociology and cultural studies, or whether there is a research problem you would like to investigate.

Many students choose literature based dissertation topics because they think it might be an easier option than doing some actual research, but they tend to miss the fact that they would need to do plenty of research into the literature if they choose theory. If you have studied the sociology of religion, which is usual in most sociology courses, then a research topic on different styles of worship among the undergraduate population might be an interesting topic.

If you do decide to do some empirical research, you have some ready made research subjects or participants in the student population. Whatever area you choose for your dissertation topic, you should attend all the tutorials that are usually run by subject supervisors.

* English Topics*

Students who major in English might decide to pick on an aspect of one of the novels they have read during their studies, critiquing and examining that particular aspect of their work. Sometimes English majors may decide to write their own creative piece for their thesis, but you would have to check this out with your professor. Examining the body of work of a favorite poet and providing text on the general tone of that particular poet’s work might also be a good topic.

No matter what you’re majoring in nor what topic you choose, you will have to write either a learning contract for your thesis or alternatively a proposal, stating what you intend to study and how. It’s difficult to give much general information on learning contracts and proposals as the style of these documents and the information. What they contain will differ from one institution to another.

The basic information you’ll probably need to provide will be a provisional title, (sometimes titles change as work progresses) the topic area under study, a preliminary list of resources or a research plan and possibly some sort of timeline for the work. Your professor will give you all the information you need on the basics of writing a learning contract or proposal.

The majority of literature that discusses asset allocation linking multiple markets has a heavy dose of macro and microeconomics. Typically, macro-micro relationships require applying econometric models to comprehend the structural linkages between the two intertwined fields of economics. John Murphy removes the hard statistical methods while retaining the economic logic with chart-based reasoning.John Murphy was the technical analyst for CNBC-TV for seven years and a professional analyst for over 25 years. His career includes time at Merrill Lynch as a Director of Commodity Technical Analysis. John has his own consulting firm, JJM Technical Advisors. He is also president of MurphyMorris, Inc., which was created to produce educational software products and online services for investors. There are adequate reader reviews on Amazon and Google Book Search, to help you decide if you will get the book. For those who have just started or are about to read the book, I’ve summarized the core concepts in the larger and essential chapters to help you get through them quicker. The number on the right of the title of the chapter is the number of pages contained within that chapter. It is not the page number. Unlike my prior book reviews, where I’ve summarized the key points for each focus chapter, I will summarize the key points across chapters 3, 7 and 11-14. This is to recognize the connectivity of intermarket relationships across the 4 main asset classes of Stocks (Equities), Bonds, Currencies and Commodities. The context of the summary is to be viewed from a retail option trader’s perspective. Here are the Key Directional Intermarket Relationships in brief. The U.S. Dollar (USD)

USD turns up as Bonds rise under normal conditions but Bonds fall during deflationary periods. USD turns down as Bonds fall but Bonds rise during deflationary periods.USD turns up as Commodities fall. USD turns down as Commodities rise.USD turns up as Stocks rise but Stocks fall during deflationary periods. USD turns down as Stocks fall but Stocks rise during deflationary periods.

The USD remains the most liquid of all major traded currencies and maintains its position as the primary global reserve currency, despite growing sentiment for an alternative basket of currencies to replace it.Bonds

Bonds turn up as the USD falls but the USD rises during deflationary periods. Bonds turn down as the USD rises but the USD falls during deflationary periods.Bonds turn up as Commodities fall. Bonds turn down as Commodities rise.Bonds turn up as Stocks rise. Bonds lead Stocks and Stocks lag behind Bonds. Bonds turn down as Stocks fall. Again, Bonds lead Stocks and Stocks lag behind Bonds.

Commodities

Commodities turn up as the USD falls. Commodities turn down as the USD rises.Commodities turn up as Bonds fall. Commodities turn down as Bonds rise.Commodities turn up as Stocks fall. Commodities turn down as Stocks rise.

Stocks

Stocks turn up as the USD rises. Stocks turn down as the USD falls.Stocks turn up as Bonds rise. Stocks turn down as Bonds fall. Again, Bonds lead Stocks and Stocks lag behind Bonds.Stocks turn up as Commodities fall. Stocks turn down as Commodities rise.

Specific to Equities, as you trade the options on Sector Indexes of the S&P 500, please be aware of the correlation versus non-correlation with other equity and non-equity traded products. I am stating in brief, the more commonly known relationships that are repeatedly cited in the book:

Changes in Energy (XLE) especially Oil (OIH, OSX) impacts Semiconductors (SMH, SOX).Utilities (XLU, UTH, UTY) are negatively correlated with Semiconductors (SMH, SOX).With broad-based Equity Indexes, the highest correlation is between Dow Jones and S&P 500.Canada benefits from rallies in oil being the ninth largest producer of crude oil globally. While Japan, a major net oil importer suffers. The tickers for this inter-play would be FXC/XDC (Canadian Dollar), FXY/XDN (Japanese Yen) and OIH/OSX (Oil). Gold (XAU, GLD) behaves like the Australian Dollar (FXA, XDA). Australia is the third largest producer of gold globally.Top three currencies that have the tightest correlations with commodities are the Australian Dollar, the Canadian Dollar and the New Zealand Dollar.Gold/Silver (XAU, GLD) has very little correlation with other Indices.

A deeper understanding of these inter-plays can help you construct effective pairs trading methods. In conclusion, from a retail option trader’s viewpoint, always remember that it is volatility that you are trading. To trade the volatilities across multiple asset classes, use an optionable Index representing that particular asset class. Remember, Implied Volatility can be added to or reduced from your portfolio, as not all Asset Classes or Sectors or Individual Companies or Countries move up/down in value ALL at the same time; and/or, ALL at the same rate. This is not a criticism of the book but a personal observation. It does not address the use of Relative Strength as a mechanism to cycle in or cycle out of an asset class, as one asset class weakens or strengthens against another asset class. I have written about Relative Strength in another article, entitled “Stock Option Trading – Fundamental Flaw in Fundamental Analysis and Stock Picking”.

Please see Consistent Results (http://www.homeoptionstrading.com/consistent_results/). Here’s the stats in summary:Return: Profit/Start of Year Cash Balance = UP +100%.Win/Loss Probability = 93.88%. 15 Wins per 1 Loss. Average Win/Average Loss = .61 Won per Loss.Performance Ratio = (Win/Loss Probability) x (Average Win/Average Loss) = 93.88% x .61 = 2.45.Positive Expectancy = ,192 per trade.

Article by Aliceshown

The Oxford English Dictionary gives the following definition of art – “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” In terms of contemporary art, the concept of “emotional power” is probably the most important part of this definition. Art is all over something that surrounds us, not only in the form of paintings and sculptures but also through music, literature, film, photography and others. So it’s no wonder that environmental problems can be found being discussed in art in one or another form.

Art is a great way to attract people`s attention to the environmental issues that are the negative result of human activity, for example climate change, pollution, resource depletion. Ecological problems shown through art have much more influence over people because you do not need to visit some lectures or read a textbook in order to be worried about ecological situation. You can simply see photography about global warming in the gallery or watch a science fiction movie in the cinema, to experience something that will touch your heart and change your relationship with nature for life.

Environmental art starts its history in 1960s, as a part of the environmental movement, and it has continued to grow since then. Examples of art forms that may be described as environmental art include:

* Land art, in which landscape is used by artists like a form or tool for creating their artworks. Spiral Jetty, by Robert Smithson, is one of the best-known examples of land art

* Arte Povera, in which, to show the influence of industry on the nature, artists use industrial or non-art materials. The most complete collection of works from the Arte Povera movement is at the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

* Site-specific art, artworks created to exist in a specific place

* Eco-art, artworks which have both ecological content and materials

Also growing in popularity are terms such as ‘sustainable art’, which has a wider definition of the environment. Sustainable art may deal with social, economic, biophysical, historical and cultural environments.

Ecological art has many different values, from the pure aesthetic appeal that many of the works have, to the creative displays many include which bring new ideas into the artistic circle. Yet they also have a more concrete advantage, in that the artist is taking advantage of their gift to bring our attention to a problem they consider to be important, and are therefore encouraging discussion about the issue. In this way it contributes valuably to our society and plays a role that increases our sense of social responsibility.

Article by Scott Dinsmore

A book review is a literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on its content, approach, and worth. It is often seen in newspapers, periodicals and on internet. A book review is a vital summary of a book. It is an open forum where the work of a writer is analysed and views are formed. Such a critical assessment is a useful foundation of information for the reader who intends to read the book.

The vital step for writing a book review is to read it methodically and understand the inside of the book as it is not simply a summing up but a review. A book review must contain three important things – introduction, description & summary, critical analysis.

Introduction: Start by talking about the fundamentals like the title of the book, author’s name and related publishing information. You should specify literature type; whether it is sociological analysis, a historical book, an academic work or something else. Also adding the background of the writer may be considered. A hockey player writing about Hockey will have special weight.

Description and Summary: The description can have extracts from the book that give precious insight of the work keeping the suspense of the storyline alive.

The Critical Analysis: The reviewer has to keep in mind not to critically analyze the entire book but talk about those points which are captivating. For example, if the book is on the urban education, one can possibly focus on their politics and culture. The opinion of the reviewer on the book is important here as it shapes your scrutiny. Such opinion also helps to offer an insight into the characteristics of the book – whether it is worth reading, whether it is interesting, whether it holds an important or interesting message to catch your attention.

Article by Eugene Novikoff

Imagination is what makes our life beautiful. The term imagination is usually used to mean something very beautiful and creative. The people with vivid imagination can portray their beautiful thoughts in for of art. Art is the practice or product of purposely arranging elements in such a way that they influence the mind or emotions of others. It incorporates various ranges of human behavior, creations, and styles of expression, such as music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings etc. The meaning of the term art is articulated in a branch of philosophy which is known as aesthetics. In an art academy, it is taught that a simple object may be featured by the creator’s intention regardless of its evident purpose. For example, a cup that apparently can be used as a container can be considered as an art if intended exclusively as an ornament and if mass-produced, a painting may be consider as craft. Conventionally, the word Art was used to signify any skill or mastery of particular field. During the Romantic period, this conception had changed a lot, when art was considered as a special talent of the human mind to be classified with religion and science. Usually, with the purpose of inspiring thoughts and emotions, art is created.

However, rather than rational understanding, art tend to facilitate intuitive. It is consciously created with this intention and fine art by design serves no other purpose. As a result, the job of art are subtle, refractive to attempt at classification, as art is the form that can be appreciated in more ways, and are often vulnerable to various interpretations.

The creative art courses are often divided into some definite categories which are related to their precise technique or medium, for example decorative arts, plastic arts, performing arts, or literature etc. Art is one of the few subjects that are academically planned depending on their techniques. An artistic medium is the essence for creating artistic work that may refer to the technique used in it. For instance, for painting, paint is the medium which is used and for drawing, paper is a medium which is used.

In case you are a person with creative inclination and have interest in arts, then going for an Art Academy would be a great choice for you. These art academies have various kinds of Art Courses in florence and you can choose the best course for you that will give wings to fly your creative talents up in the sky. The people who are into the field of art are called as artists. These people by using their great imagination give shape to the ordinary things an extra ordinary feel and look. Unlike general people, artists can give shape to anything in this world. The best thing is that the artists have the capacity to express their thoughts in a more proper and creative way where the normal human beings lack in. The people with great creative instinct and inclination have created great things in this world and will be creating forever.

The Russian Academy of Art – It should come as no surprise that the Russian Academy of Art is located in Florence, Italy, being that the city is the cradle of the Renaissance epoch. It holds centuries of history, a treasure in many ways and especially regarding fine arts.

Article by Scott Dinsmore

There is no need to panic even if this is the first time you are reviewing a literary book . Reviewing a work of literature is a lot like writing a school book report. The only difference between the two is that here along with summarizing a work you are also expected to present an opinion on that work’s merit. You can make a career in being a book reviewer; renowned literary critics are fundamentally expert readers. They stress on assessing the aesthetic value of literary works through which they can guide others in deciding whether or not to read a book.

For a book review , first of all you need to read the book carefully. If it is short enough or having a deep meaning you may consider reading it a second time before you start writing the review. In case of a long book, while reading it the first time, keep underlining the main sections that you may be interested in re-reading later, before starting to write or anytime during the writing process.

Establish the genre of the book; whether it is poetry, fiction or a play. Also find out if the author has worked within the standards of the genre, or somehow tried to expand those conventions. Take abundant notes that should include significant quotes you may wish to use in your review and your ideas in response to the text.

Find out the basic theme of the book and what the author is trying to say exactly. You can have a research on the author’s life online and the other books written by him or her. Also you can add the critical response to these other books written by the author.

While writing the review you should present the findings of your research wholeheartedly. Start with some of the interesting facts about the author’s biography. Summarize the plot design of the book and give an accurate outline of the theme. Try to conclude with an opinion so that the reader can be persuaded that it is worth his time or to turn him away from the book.
