Religious Hindu poems play a crucial role in the cultural life of devout Hindus. Many of these poems are recited or sung as prayers daily or on special occasions, while others are listened to or sung as devotional pieces whenever the devotee wishes. Numerous sacred mantras extol the holiness and benevolence of God in Hinduism, with Hindu devotees worshiping their favorite gods by chanting these mantras or hymns.
One prominent religious Hindu poem is the “Hanuman Chalisa,” a lengthy poem composed by Tulsidas in praise of Lord Hanuman. The Hanuman Chalisa has become widely popular among modern Hindus, with many devout followers reciting it weekly as a prayer to Lord Hanuman, often on Tuesdays.
Mirabai’s bhajans hold significant importance in religious Hindu poetry. These bhajans are devotional, lyrical poem-like songs sung in praise of Lord Krishna. Mirabai’s poetry prioritizes love for Krishna above all else in life. Her poem-songs portray Krishna sometimes as a husband and at other times as a lover, expressing Mirabai’s intense desire for union with her Lord. Thus, her poems are both spiritual and devotional in theme and tone.
