If you are serious about learning to play the guitar, you will inevitably come across various Guitar Basics, such as terminology. One of the guitar terms you will likely encounter is “guitar frets.” So, what are guitar frets?

The metal strips on the fretboard are collectively called frets. However, it is important to pay close attention because “frets” can have multiple meanings.

The primary definition of guitar frets is those metal strips on the fretboard. The additional meaning refers to the space between two metal strips.

For example, the space between the nut and the first metal strip is called the first fret. The space between the first and second metal strips is called the second fret, and so on.

When guitar players talk about frets, they are usually referring to the spaces between those metal strips. This is the area where you press down the guitar strings to produce different tones while playing.
