Buying a new instrument can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for. It is best that you take an experienced person with you, such as a teacher or someone who has been playing the violin for a while, to help you spot the faults (if any) on a violin. You do not have to worry about the quality of the strings, as you will most probably need to replace them when you buy your violin (violin strings are usually replaced every 3 to 4 months, depending on how often it is played). If the violin comes with a good set of strings, that is an added bonus.
The term ‘try before you buy’ applies to the violin as well. Check the power and sound quality of the violin.

The violin comes with extra inventory parts. These can be purchased separately from any music store. They include the bow, rosin, shoulder rest, strings and a case.
When purchasing a bow, make sure the bow has a good weight, is flexible and well balanced. When purchasing rosin, ask the person at the store about the quality of different types or brands of rosin.
The shoulder rest should be secure when you fix it onto your violin and not move. It should be comfortable as you will have to rely on it and your chin rest to hold up your violin while you play.
There are many brands of strings you can purchase at the music store. You can either ask your teacher for recommendations, or the person at the music store, as they would know best. As mentioned above, you should regularly change your strings as they wear out and can suddenly snap off whilst playing if they are old.
A case is very important as you will need it to carry your violin around. The standard case fits your violin, shoulder rest, a bow (or two) and has a pouch for your rosin (and perhaps a metronome or tuner). It should also come with a strap for easy carry. Fancier cases can come with hygrometers and humidifiers.
