This is a book review of a new novel called The Bestiary. It is a fantasy tale about the pursuit of a secret book called The Caravan Bestiary, which catalogued the mythical creatures that were denied access to Noah’s Ark.

The movie Evan Almighty has spurred a lot of interest in the story of Noah’s Ark. We all know the story, and The Bestiary, written by Nicholas Christopher, tells a different side of this story. Did you ever wonder what happened to the unicorn or the manticore or the dragon?

The Bestiary tells us that these creatures are not mythical, they really existed and their extinction was due to the fact that they were denied access to Noah’s ark. But we still know of them because they were all carefully catalogued in a mysterious book called The Caravan Bestiary.

This book is a tale of one man’s pursuit of this mysterious book. It is a scholarly sleuth that is reminiscent of the DaVinci code. We travel the world and haunt some very old places in our pursuit of the book but this novel goes beyond the normal fantasy sleuth tale and takes you on a trip somewhere else.

There is a message in this book. It is a reverent look at the creatures of our world, both mythical and real. And it is a warning message about the path of extinction that is currently being taken by many of the special creatures that now inhabit the earth. It asks the question: Shouldn’t we do something? Before too many more beautiful creatures are added to the list of mythical creatures that once maybe existed?

This is a thinking persons fantasy novel that, even though is fantasy, it is very relevant and important to the world we live in today. It is currently available by pre-order only and scheduled to be released in July 2007.

Novel writing made easy sounds like a misnomer doesn’t it. This is because at some point when you are trying to write a novel you are going to have to sit down and actually write at least 40,000 words (and that would be if you want to write a very short novel) which isn’t actually hugely easy.  The problem with novel writing is that few people realise just how much planning, organisation, editing and simply re-writing goes in to a typical novel. Whether you are writing a science fiction fantasy novel or a romance novel, you need to pin down your plot, AND your entire scenery before even writing a word. Starting with the plot you need to work out and write down every step of your plot, every intricacy and every single twist. This writing tip will make your actual writing a whole lot easier. With more creative writing you then need to map out everything that goes on around the central plot- are there alien races, sprawling mansions or an evil step sister? Map out all their characteristics so you know how they will behave in any given situation.

Tip 3) Ok so everything is beginning to take shape but we aren’t quite at the stage where we can write a novel yet. Step two however lets us begin writing as we need to test our characters in their scenes. Tip 4) Right ok our idea should be looking good by now so we can actually start writing our book, or books if you’re feeling bold. Get your creative writing juices flowing and get cracking – do not under any circumstances leave your writing for more than one or two days or you will struggle to get back to it.

Nowadays if you read interviews of any top business people in any news media you will invariably see a question that asks which book they recently read or are currently reading. Unfortunately they do not realize that a similar or identical one would have been experimented elsewhere because they did not bother to read history. The human behavioural patterns of what is going on right now would have definitely occurred somewhere in the past.

3. History is not really some useless stuff as most people think. History prevents you from reinventing the wheel. Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Throughout history people have committed the same mistakes of trying to subdue people, wage wars, commit treachery, and various forms of atrocities on each other leading to the same guaranteed disastrous results as experienced earlier. Modern man is no different and even today you see dictators and cruel people ruling many countries and organizations. And similar crimes and follies occur inside workplaces with equivalent disastrous results. Hence it is highly necessary to read history as it teaches the current generation to understand things that don’t work or never worked in the past. If you can understand history in the right perspective it can help the present business managements to avoid needless and futile experimentation with people management. By learning the patterns of events in history, you can recognize the repeat of the same patterns in what is going on around you today.

4. History will not tell you where you are going, but it will tell you how you got there. What you did in the past decided the present, and what you do now will later decide the future. History offers a wealth of information about how people, societies and even civilizations behave. History can teach you some great lessons in people management like the mistakes our ancestors did, the disastrous consequences, the fall from grace of mighty leaders and dictators, and many great ups and downs. History is splattered with examples of bad people management and its disastrous results. Many kings have been assassinated due to their bad people management by the very people they trusted. For example, Julius Caesar was stabbed by his trusted friend Brutus. Many have been beheaded for their follies. Wars have started due to abuse, criticism and harassment. Applied to business organizations make the same mistakes again and again, but disguise it as newer or modern management theories and learning experiences. But by reading and understanding history you can avoid repeating the same mistakes again and again. History helps you look at both the past and future at once. And you can constantly educate yourself from those who were born earlier than you and become like Janus, the Roman god who had two heads back to back to look into the future and the past at the same time.

5. History helps create good businesspeople and professionals, though it may not exactly define a specific job profile in the corporate world. But by studying the global past it gives one the knowledge and flexibility required in many work situations. For example, you can develop good research skills and use historical examples to design modern business plans. For example, the wisdom of Aristotle or Socrates told centuries ago is still valid for many business success and failures. Knowledge of history is an asset for a variety of work and professional situations in modern global context. History helps in identifying, understanding and avoiding cultural sensitivities. It provides evidence about how nations have interacted with other countries and societies in the past, and how that long standing enmity or friendship between the countries can affect business.

Writing a critical book review can be an exciting task. While a book review basically just outlines the storyline of a book, a critical book review allows the reviewer to delve into all aspects of the text. Book reviews of this type are most often done either for the author or for a wider audience. Most book reviewers in this line of work follow a fairly basic formula.

Comment on how the title ties into the book’s text. Study the title of the book. Is the title catchy and interesting?

Identify the genre of the book. Does the text of the book fit the intended genre? If you can’t figure out what the genre is then most likely the reader won’t be able to either.

Comment on the length of the book. For instance, a novel should be 80,000 to 120,000 words. Does this book follow those guidelines? If the book is longer than the maximum, then the author of the book might consider breaking the novel into parts or doing a careful edit to remove excess.

If the novel is shorter than the suggested minimum, then the author may need to go back and add more detail.

Read the opening lines of the book. Comment on whether or not you found the opening lines engaging enough to hold your interest and make you want to keep turning the pages. A good novel quite frequently opens in media res (in the middle of the action).

The dialogue should follow normal speech patterns and not sound forced or clipped. On the other hand, authors should beware of using too much straight dialect or they will lose their readers. Analyze the dialogue.

What is the book trying to say and is it said effectively? Does the book have patterns that are carried out throughout? Discuss the overall plot and theme of the book. Comment on the use of symbolism, metaphor, and tone. Are the characters developed enough and do they contribute to the plot? You get the idea.

Check the mechanics. Finally, comment on the overall mechanics of the book – the grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Some final tips: Keep your tone conversational when writing a critical book review for the author. Be more formal and academic when writing a critical book review for a wider audience. Don’t be nasty. There is no need to crush a writer by telling him he should not be writing in the first place. Give constructive criticism only.
