M. A. Everaux only has two titles out, but they are both excellent books. North Wolf and The Claiming of Moira Shine. I am going to do a review of The Claiming of Moira Shine in this article.

I originally read North Wolf first and enjoyed it a great deal, when her next title came out I had to check it out. The blurb and excerpt I read did not really appeal to me. It sounded very political and a bit dry (I hate any type of politics in romances) However, because I did enjoy North Wolf I decided to try it.

I should also warn that there is a fair bit of violence in this novel, it’s also romantic so be prepared for some hot scenes too.

It is a long book, set in a futuristic/alternate world where the earth is dying. Pollution and such have taken their toll. Aliens from another world have invaded, the remaining inhabitants of earth are being rounded up and sold into slavery to the Kinnians.

Moira is among the last to be captured and shipped out, she was going to go into slavery but since an incident with a guard who ended up dead she was to be put to death.

However she is saved from that by Lord Marin, who is determined to save her to be his sex slave. Moira, in the end tries to take her life to escape.

Lord Marin is now in a dilemma. Not only can he not understand how she could try and do this, it’s a foreign concept to them, but if word got out of Moira trying to kill herself he could loose everything.

He approaches Anath, an adviser to the King who has had experience with difficult slaves. Anath, refuses to help, however he says he would take the girl and make the problem disappear for Marin. Marin eventually accepts his offer as he cannot stand to loose face and turns Moira over to him.

Anath doesn’t want Moira as a sex slave but wants her to spy for him. This is much more preferable to Moira and she accepts her spying duties gratefully. She acts as a kitchen slave and can freely go where Anath would be questioned.

Moira and Anath’s relationship builds over time. The characterization is great. As I said I’m not interested in political intrigue in romances but it fit in well here and wasn’t too much, as in it didn’t take away from the relationship growing between Anath and Moira.

I give this book a 5 star rating. Excellent read.

I have been a fan of David Baldacci, since I read The Winner back in 1997. I so enjoyed his style of writing, I have read all his books to date and eagerly await his new books. The Camel Club is no exception to the rule. Another page-turner thriller.

Cast of Characters:

Members of the Camel Club

Oliver Stone – who camps outside the Whitehouse to protest the government and lives at a church where he tends to the commentary is the lead conspiracy theorist

Caleb Shaw – who loves to dress in period costume and works at the Library of Congress in the rare books department

Reuben Rhodes - ex government employee, turned to loading dock worker, drug burnout

Milton Farb – who suffers from OCD, has a perfect memory, mathematical prodigy and owns a website building business and won lots of money on Jeopardy

Other Characters:

Alex Ford – secret service agent who is a bit unclear where his loyalties lie, near retirement

Carter Grey – intelligence chief

Plot: When the Camel Club gathers for a clandestine meeting to discuss the latest conspiracy theories they stumble upon a crime. The four witness the murder of an intelligence analyst and barely escape with their own lives intact.

The morning paper reveals the death as an a suicide, which the Camel Club knows to be false. When they begin to investigate they become targets of the same killers.

Meanwhile, Alex Ford disagrees with the official verdict and is reassigned to Presidential protection detail.

Unbeknownst to Alex, a terrorist cell is waiting to kill the president in his hometown. Meanwhile the Camel Club is trying to find out the truth about the killing, while trying to stay alive.

There are several plots going on at the same time and the story can sometimes be a bit confusing, but there are lots of surprises including the attempted assassination of the president (what a twist) and the reason behind the murder.

This is a typically fantastic read for anyone who loves intrigue, spy technology, terrorists and conspiracies. You will be hard pressed to see how this turns out – as usual David Baldacci gives you a surprise ending. Loved this book! 688 pages of pure intrigue! 9 out of 10.

Only negative was the book was a bit long.

Finally the game that everyone has been talking about has hit the shelves. Fable for the XBox has gone through many name changes, but it had originally started out as Project Ego; which is fitting considering how vain the character is. Fable is a model game worthy of being a prototype for the games of the future. Granted the developers did not achieve all of the goals that they had set forth in the beginning, but they weren’t afraid to reach for the stars. One of the features that they were trying for in Fable, but could not accomplish, was direct competition between other heroes for both infamy and missions. This would have pushed the player into taking on and completing the missions faster than they otherwise would so that the other heroes would not get to them first. While this added competition would have been interesting the fact that they could not implement it does not in any way adversely affect the game. Fable is a fairly straightforward action game with plenty of extras to grab your attention and hold onto it.

You begin the game as a little boy in a town called Oakvale. Your father offers you some money for all of the good deeds that you do. Throughout the town there will be people in need of your help which will help you earn some of that money. It is also your sister’s birthday so you need to use that money to buy her a gift. Once you give your sister her present the story line begins. Your town is attacked and your father is killed. Bandits then seize your mother and your sister. You are left all alone in a town that is on fire. Then a man appears and offers to help you. He takes you to a place called the Heroes’ Guild where you will learn to become a hero.

At the Heroes’ Guild you will meet a young girl who is also in training. Her character was meant to be one of the heroes that you would have been in direct competition with had they been able to implement that aspect of the game. However there is still a bit of competition between the two of them, but it does not alter the story line. She will be your sparring partner. You will also be working with the Guild Master, he will train you in all of the combat techniques. Your character will begin aging at this time and continue aging as the story progresses.

Once you have finished all of the training you will be able to take on missions. These missions will increase your renown, experience, and your pocket book. You will have the choice to take missions for the good side or the bad side and depending on that choice your character will become good or evil. Your appearance will change depending on what type of person you choose to be. If you are good you will be covered in a white light and butterflies will fly around you. If you choose evil then your eyes will glow red and red smoke will appear around your character.

The story itself is leading you up to avenging your family’s death and capture. You will find out bits and pieces about what happened that night in Oakvale and why it happened.

Everyone has a certain style of fighting that they like to use in games. Some prefer magic and others like to cut enemies apart with edged weapons. In this game your preferred style of fighting will have an impact on the character’s appearance and abilities. If magic is your choice then the character will age much faster and physical combat will become difficult. If using weapons like a sword or a club is more your style then the character will beef up and probably end up with more scars. Whatever the choice your character will change accordingly. You will also gain experience points in the type of fighting style that you use when killing your enemies. These points will boost your ability in that fighting category allowing you to kill your enemies with more skill and ease.

You can buy titles that you want your character to go by. The title that you choose will determine what people call you; you can change the title at any time by just buying a new one. There are titles more appropriate for evil characters and titles for good characters. If your character is a good hero then the people in the villages will come up to you more often and women will want to marry you (men too). If your character is evil then people will run from you more often and it is harder to find a wife. Either way your name will be known all over the world.

The fighting in this game is really simple. You will be given a choice to use a weapon like a bow and arrow which takes more skill or use a sword which takes more brute force. The bow is mostly used when you do not want to be detected by your enemies or your enemies are too far away. The bow is the hardest weapon to use. Using the edged weapons or blunt objects are very easy to master, but that also depends on what size, shape, etc. the weapon is. You need to get a weapon that is fitting to your character’s strength and skill. The magic is also very easy to master and is the best part of the fighting once you have upgraded the power levels.

Missions are not the only thing that this game has to offer. There are hidden objects all over the place. Be sure to buy a spade and a fishing pole because these will be helpful in uncovering important hidden items. There is also a status screen that will keep track of all of the things that your character has done (including how many times he has had sex). You can marry multiple people, become a widow, get a divorce, buy property, and the list just continues.

The graphics are outstanding, the details to the scenery were meticulously thought out and employed to perfection. The world of Albion is huge and each part of the world is unique so that one place looks completely different from another. The characters are also very unique with a great variety of them to encounter. Even with all of this detail the game very rarely encounters any slowdown. The sound for the game is nothing to balk at; the acting is well done and the soundtrack sets the perfect tone. Nearly everything about this game was perfectly orchestrated.

This game has some great replay value. You can continue working on your stats by marrying more and more people or you can buy up all of the properties. There is no limit to how long you can play this game; although it does become a bit monotonous.

There should be nothing stopping you from running out and renting this game right now; I guarantee that you will enjoy it. To watch the story line unfold is nail biting suspense; you can’t wait to find out what happens next.

If you are anything like me, then you hate singing in public. Or just doing it in front of people in general. Just the thought of someone actually hearing how I really sing and hear my real voice makes me shudder. But why is this? Why do people feel like they can’t let some people hear how they actually sing? I always love to play this trick when I am in the car with someone, I turn off the music when I know they are singing. And it always gets them by surprise, so you will get to hear a glimpse of how they really sing. It really is too funny, but its a little mean as well. So I know that I am not the only one that is afraid to sing in front of other people.
So here’s my question, if you learn how to sing does it make your more comfortable singing in front of people? I mean honestly be able to sing like there is no tomorrow and bare your soul. None of that singing quietly business, the real deal singing that makes someone get chills. Since I am not able to afford a tutor, I have been forced to look online for alternatives if I want to learn. I was actually surprised at how many learn at home programs that there is!
I came across Singing Success by Brett Manning, so naturally I wanted to hear more. I ended up on a site called ReviewMOZ.org where they offer product comparisons of the Singing Success Review as well Singorama Review. After I finished reading the Singing Success review, I was pretty darn dead set on buying it. It had great reviews, so I felt that I wasn’t afraid to buy it. I mean if it is going to help me learn how to sing better why not right? Best of luck friends!

Tami Hoag’s book Lucky’s Lady is a bit different from her previous novels, but it is definitely interesting and takes the reader into a world that is not often explored: The backwoods of Louisiana or the Cajun Bayous! Below is my review of Lucky’s Lady by Tami Hoag.

Main Characters:

Serena Sheridan: Successful psychiatrist from Charleston returns home to Louisiana

Lucky Doucet: a mysterious and potentially dangerous Cajun who is feared by most

Shelby: Serena’s sister, who has never gotten along with her

Gifford Sheridan: Serena’s grandfather, who owns a large ancestral home which a chemical company is trying to buy

Plot:: When Serena Sheridan, returns to her ancestral home for a break from her psychiatric practice in Charleston, South Carolina, she is faced with an unforseen problem. Her grandfather has left his home and moved into the Louisiana bayou, where he keeps a shack for fishing and hunting.

He seems to be unable to handle the financial problems surrounding his home and business and the prospect of selling it to a large chemical company who wishes to build a plant on the property. Of course her sister, wishes for him to sell, so that she can get the money to help advance her husband’s political dreams.

Serena must venture into the bayou and the only person who can get her there is a shady character named Lucky Doucet. Lucky has a bad reputation and no one seems to know much about him, except that he lives in the Bayou and is feared by the locals.

Lucky and Serena, soon learn to like and respect each other, which develops into an unusual love story. Lucky turns out not to be the dangerous criminal, but more of a protector of the bayou and the people who live there. He keeps out poachers and those who wish harm on the bayou.

Lucky has his own demons, which he must deal with, while trying to help Serena convince her father not to sell the property.

I enjoyed the way Tami Hoag, describes the bayou and you really feel that you are on the pirogue and poling through the bayou. The dialogue from Lucky is Cajun French and makes the book feel authentic and very romantic. There is even a glossary in the back translating the french phrases, so you know exactly what Lucky is talking about!

Lucky’s Lady is filled with mystery, action, intrigue and lots of romance. I usually read mystery and crime novels, but found this a refreshing break with the unusual love story intertwined. I really enjoyed this book and think that most of Tami Hoag’s women fans will love this book.

For men, there may be a bit too much of the romance, yet I did not personally mind it and will reread this book sometime in the future. Overall, this 342 page, was a page turner and a very enjoyable read from cover to cover.

Morgan pens an engaging urban fantasy romance with “Immortally Yours,” blending fantasy and urban grit effortlessly. Morgan’s hero, immortal Chase Michaels, has his hands full when he meets the Heir of Summer, Belle Gardner. It’s love at first gunshot. Belle shoots Chase in the chest. It’s a good thing he’s immortal, because he’s got his hands full with the feisty heir.

The novel opens with a bang and a surprise as Belle discovers Chase isn’t really dead and he’s attractive as sin. Chase learns Belle is running for her life from her step-father, the Knight of Spring, who wants to use Belle for his nefarious plan to take over the world.

Chase decides to help Belle and his friends, Caeryn and Raiz, tag along for the ride. However, the Queen of the Winter Court, Kylanndria, has other plans. She puts a sliver of winter into Chase, almost killing him. Belle risks everything to take him into the lands so the witchling can heal him.

Once Chase is better, both him and Belle realize there’s a bigger threat to the world. Belle’s step-father is in league with a Nespharillium, who want to take over the world. All of the lands are going to have to band together, but will the battle to end all battles ruin the happiness that Chase and Belle so desperately desire?

Morgan’s plot is crisp, moving at a fast clip. His world is wildly creative, full of your favorite character including a ghost, a wolf, and Dhampire. (half human-half vampire creature.)

Morgan’s dialogue adds to the authenticity of the story, bringing the urban and fantasy together.

The characters shine in this story. Not only is there a great supporting cast, but Chase and Belle are complex and dynamic. Chase was made immortal after killing a temple full of female warriors. As part of his sentence, Chase hears the female guardian and her warriors in his head. They annoy the hell out of him, but he reluctantly follows their advice. Belle brings out the best in him. He’s loyal, courageous, and full of colorful commentary.

Belle must embrace her destiny as the Heir of Summer, but has a challenging road in front of her. Trust doesn’t come easy since her step-father put her mother in a mental home. Belle has got to trust her heart – and her love – for Chase.

The love scene is tasteful and full of rich emotion. “Immortally Yours” is an action packed adventure filled urban fantasy that grabs the reader on page one.

Terry L Dorn’s The Cross and the Psychiatrist-Stopping a Modern-day Epidemic is a must read for everyone, particularly those who are close to individuals who have psychiatric disabilities. Throughout the text, the author emphasizes that these individuals should not be bound by a stigma and label. On the contrary, Dorn offers what all psychiatric patients and their family members seek: hope. Often times, being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel is enough to keep the individual pushing for a return to normalcy. Dorn vigorously supports this concept, and he firmly believes that the church, and faith in general, can help patients return to leading normal lives.

What sets this book apart from other psychiatric awareness texts is that the information does not make up a thousand-page textbook. Instead, this book essentially draws from the real-life experiences of Terry Dorn.

One passage that is particularly indicative of Dorn’s stance states, “Mental illness has become the leprosy of this age. Stigma and ignorance has built a wall that keeps many of these wounded people away from being socially acceptable ever again.”

The truly staggering statistic that Dorn reveals in his introduction is that there are nearly 300,000 mental health consumers in Washington State alone, according to the Division of the Washington State Health and Human Services; however, there are likely twice that many in need of mental health who don’t come forward due to the stigma of becoming a social outcast. As a result, the author emphatically requests that family members and loved ones not scorn mental sufferers as they are already depressed and losing touch with family members and society at large.

Shunning them will only plunge them into a deeper and darker reservoir of hopelessness and despair.

Ultimately, The Cross and the Psychiatrist is a story about an individual who loses his business, his wife, becomes homeless, and falls into a spiraling pattern of depression. This is the story about a painful past, growing up on the streets of Minneapolis, and being labeled as a psychiatric patient from a young age.

More than anything else, Dorn fulfills to perfection, the role of a liberator for mental illness patients, clearly outlining the premise: mental health patients want hope, to be cared for, and understood. They desire to be validated; they have worth. Terry L. Dorn, as author of The Cross and the Psychiatrist, is their advocate. For anyone who has ever wondered about the plight of patients who are mentally ill, their families, their issues–look no more. This wonderful book treats this sensitive subject with candor and dignity.

Book Review for: Claimed by the Highlander

Written by: Julianne MacLean

St. Martin’s Paperback

ISBN: 978-1-4229-6532-3

Avail: in print and ebook

5 Stars

Reviewed by: S. Burkhart

MacLean pens a story filled with adventure, suspense and romance. Angus MacDonald storms the gates of Kinloch Castle intent on claiming his family’s home, only now the MacEwens are there and in order to claim the heart of the castle, he’ll need to earn Gwendolen MacEwen’s love.

Set in 1718 Scotland, Gwendolen’s family was given Kinloch Castle for their support of the English Hanoverian King. Unfortunately, her father has recently passed, leaving the castle vulnerable. Enter Angus MacDonald. His father previously held the castle. He storms the gates and asserts his right as the new laird. He also announces his intention to wed Gwendolen.

The MacEwen lass is mortified by Angus’ plan, but strikes a deal to marry him to keep the peace when she witnesses his leniency toward her clan. Still, she betrays him by sending a letter to the local English garrison asking for help.

Angus is furious to learn that his intended betrayed him, but he holds firm to his promise not to bed her until their wedding night.

Despite all the initial anger and hurt between Angus and Gwen, there’s no denying the raw, primal attraction between the two. Gwen softens toward her intended when she observes little acts of compassion from him. Angus awakens Gwen’s sensual side and soon learns that he enjoys his wife’s lovemaking. Angus and Gwen come together over common ground, but can they build the trust needed to keep Kinloch from falling into the wrong hands?

MacLean grabs the reader in the opening chapter with a suspenseful and intense fight and the plot never lets up. The vivid descriptions and authentic dialogue make Angus’ and Gwen’s story spring into life.

The most enjoyable part of the novel is the rich characterization of Angus and Gwen along with a strong supporting cast.

Angus is a warrior who has made mistakes. He doesn’t think he can atone for them, but Gwen’s growing affection give him something he’s never known before – hope. The scene with Angus and Gwen in the chapel allows Angus to really grow as a character as well as lets the couple shine romantically.

Gwen is proud and haunty. Angus shows her unexpected compassion which softens her edges. Gwen must learn to trust and prove to Angus she means what she says.

The love scenes are sensual and romantic and allow for Gwen and Angus to really connect as a couple. “Claimed by the Highlander,” will leave the reader breathless. You can’t put it down.
