Solos in music can be pre-rehearsed performances of memorized notes or they can be improvised. In genres like rock and jazz, which heavily feature the guitar, solos are often improvised. To deliver a great solo, it is important to have a solid understanding of guitar scales.

One reason for this is that it can be challenging to make a rehearsed solo sound inspired and fresh. Another reason is that each performance of a rehearsed solo will be identical, whereas improvised solos offer a range of possibilities.

Fortunately, the guitar is a relatively simple instrument for playing scales. This is partly because transposing to different keys is as easy as playing the same finger pattern in different positions on the fretboard.

A great starting point is to practice playing the major scale using a finger pattern that can be easily applied to any position on the fretboard. This allows for easy playing in any key. It is also straightforward to play all the minor keys by playing the relative minor of any major key you have learned. This variety expands the potential for musical expression during improvised solos.
