For some a career choice is sports, some history, science, business management so on and so on. Some opt to create, or recreate images into a form of art known as the Visual Arts. One great thing about all of these different people is that we all spend at least a few moments of everyday looking at something that spurs a thought or emotion. People flock to a release found in the Visual Arts. Any form of art that can be taken in through the eyes. The human creature has a fascination with looking at odd, provocative and curious objects whether created or in nature. This explains why so many go a park or watch birds or stars. This also explains why people recreate these images in paintings, photographs drawings and more. For many years people have recreated, or created scenes on rock, wood, clay, canvas and anything else they can use. Today you can see these images on TV, film, on the wall of a public building in the form of what we call graffiti, any place you can scribble is a “canvas” for a visual form of art.Art. The key word here is debatable. I knew of a filmmaker who glued feathers to celluloid(film) and called that art. OK. In a gallery I saw a piece of cardboard with a hanger pierced through it. OK. I prefer Ansel Adams, or a Van Gogh. But the point is these are the Arts Visual. You can go to Webster’s dictionary for a definition on art:1. The products of human creativity; works of art collectively; “an art exhibition”; “a fine collection of art”.[Wordnet] 2. The creation of beautiful or significant things; “art does not need to be innovative to be good”; “I was never any good at art”; “he said that architecture is the art of wasting space beautifully”.[Wordnet] People will always debate it’s definition. If it appeals to your eye, if it provokes thought, perhaps its art to you, or me.Take time out of your every day life and look around at anything, perhaps you see graffiti on your morning commute to work. Maybe you see something in the clouds and feel like recreating that in a painting, your now an artist. Don’t try to tell some highbrow wine n cheesers that. But don’t let that worry you. What would life be like if there was no art? Can you imagine what that would be? Think about an average day. You wake up in the morning, maybe to music on your clock radio. Perhaps you read the paper or online news stories. Both the paper and internet have ads enhanced with graphic design. You dress in clothing conceived of by a designer, and perhaps adorn yourself with accessories and jewelry. Maybe you go out for breakfast to a restaurant with a creative menu. Art, or creative expression is everywhere.

Last weekend I visited a series of “open studios” in my area. The art ranged from blown glass, to paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, handmade paper, and so much more. Not all the work was great, some was unique, thoughtful, playful, inspirational. The visual arts, the performing arts such as theater, spoken word, and dance, the written arts–literature, poetry, plays, and the ever-present movies or films, are all forms of creative expression that are so much a part of our lives that we really could not live with out them.

Of course, not everyone enjoys theater or poetry.

Some do not listen to music or read books. But the arts are the way we express and celebrate who we are. We learn about ourselves and others through the arts. Books, music and film transport us into other worlds. The arts carry our stories through history. Our ceremonies express our traditions. Our stories are our identities.

As an expressive arts’ therapist, I’ve used ritual, dreamwork, storytelling, collage, clay, sand tray and drawing to help people deal with life’s challenges. The process of doing art is healing in itself, and the finished product gives the maker a sense of completion and even pride.

Some people think the arts are frivolous.

In fact, the arts as creative expression give the art maker a sense of self. They give the viewer or listener meaning and they feed our imaginations. Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Who would argue with one of the world’s greatest thinkers.
