Harmony

At the heart of Pythagoras’ teachings was the vision of the fundamental “harmony” of the universe. This harmony had to be “abstracted” from the confusion of visible “things” and every day events. Pythagoras’ desire to find the mathematical harmonies of all things. He made the conjecture that the universe was a ideal sphere–and that the earth, at the center of the universe, was also a perfect sphere. He deduced properly the cause of the shadow of the moon–and the reasons for its occasional eclipses.

Theorem

Thus in the course of his quest, he found that the total of the angles of any triangle always added up to the total of two right angles (180 degrees). He discovered (the Pythagorean theorem) that the sum of the square of the two sides of a right-angled triangle is always equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the longest side). Pythagoras, is known to history for being the first person to reveal the theorem The Pythagorean Theorem, dealing with the ratios of a triangle in plane geometry, is the most well-known example of his vigorous work with numbers. His work in harmonics and the musical scale, a science he is generally credited with founding, has never been displaced

Orphist Movement

Pythagoras was definitely a part of the Orphist movement within the extensively popular Dionysian cult of ancient Greece. Dionysianism —related to the worship of Dionysus or Bacchus, god of wine. Orphism was a reform movement within Dionysianism set off by the Greek mind-set with its interest in a higher indulgent of why things are the way they are. Pythagoras was an Orphist–seeking to probe even entrenched into the mystery of things. Indeed, it should be stress that the insights gained in this “philosophy” qua “theory” of the physical order are not calculated so much for manipulating the environment as for saving one’s soul.
