…Guidelines on how to maintain market profile during an economic downturn…

Monday 2nd March 2009 – UK based communications agency, Technology PR http://www.technologypr.eu warns companies against switching off their communications programme to save on short term costs at the expense of longer term business success, and offers a five point plan to maintain market profile.

Lena Ahad, Director of Technology PR says: “In an economic downturn, some businesses panic and switch off their marketing spend. This is completely counter productive.

Salespeople are still expected to close deals and hit quarterly targets – yet this process is made more difficult if the market requires education about your product or service and there’s no communication support to get your key messages across.”

Ahad, who has successfully run campaigns for leading technology firms such as IBM, Cisco, BT and supported start-ups in the UK, Europe and Northern America, adds: “PR drives business value – at a lower cost than any other marketing function. For existing and potential customers, editorial coverage still confers independent validation of the company’s offering and so can help influence purchasing decisions, deliver great results and help maintain a level of stability whilst the business rides out the recession. The question isn’t should we have a PR programme – but what PR firm should we partner with to get the best results.”

Guidelines for businesses to secure communications success:

1. Get your messages right: If your target market doesn’t understand your proposition they won’t buy your service or product. Review your website and collateral and get rid of jargon. Sounds simple – but so many companies get this basic step wrong.

2. Spend smart: Think carefully about where you are spending your communications budget and prioritise what you want to achieve. Be realistic about what it will cost to fund activities and bring in specialists to augment your own resources in order to ensure success. The old motto – “you get what you pay for” – is still true, even in this economic climate.

3. Continue to educate your audiences: Develop a regular stream of compelling news stories and by-line articles demonstrating thought leadership which will help to ensure that you have continued mindshare – and differentiate your offerings against the undifferentiated ‘noise’ from your competitors. Remember: “out of sight is out of mind”.

4. Demonstrate your successes: Organisations prefer to buy from companies that can prove their success in the market. So encourage customer case studies and testimonials at the outset (this shouldn’t be an afterthought). Have open discussions with your customers and invite your communications team to be part of the process early on.

5. Partner with an expert that shares your passion and understands your goals: All PR agencies are not the same and nor are the consultants who work in them. So find a team that has the breadth and depth of experience to support your business goals – and the passion to get you meaningful results. Understand what success looks like – don’t be tempted to judge on tactical criteria such as the number of press clips that have been generated, but measure whether the campaign has improved your market awareness. Look to your agency to guide you – and be prepared to take their advice.

There are two types of business owners who consider technology differently:

Type I – “The Gadget Person”

This type of owner embraces technology at most levels. They are considered “early adopters” from a technology point of view. The gadget guys were the first ones to get a Palm Pilot in 1995 and loaded all their contacts on the device. They were excited to set appointments and have electronic reminders beep all day long.

Type II – “Just make it work”

This type of owner proudly proclaims that they know very little to nothing about technology and are content to leave it that way. They were wary of email at first, but have come to rely on it quite a bit.

Both types are passionate about their business and could benefit from strategic application of the right technology solutions.

Understand Your Process

Coupled with technology is “process.” Process is defined as steps required to manufacture your products or the means to provide your services. A clean and efficient process is the key to applying any technology solution successfully. The wrong, or inefficient process, will lead you to spend $ 100k on an unnecessary system. The efficient process will save you money when implementing technology and should increase your profits. It is vitally important for your business that you examine all your processes BEFORE implementing any technology solution.

If your process is efficient, then applying a technology solution will automate the operation which will properly enable growth. On the flipside, if your process is inefficient, then applying technology will be costly and likely work against itself. Technology for the sake of technology is not going to solve anything. In fact, without the proper process and strategy, you will likely create problems and reduce your margins by applying the wrong technology solution. A technology “solution” should solve something.

A technology solution should meet at least one of the following four criteria:

1. reduce operating expenses

2. automate existing (efficient) processes to enable growth

3. provide an effective means to communicate

4. enable your business to improve its products and/or services

Before the first dime is spent, insure that your examine these criteria.

But does the organization have an Information Technology vision in place. Some organization may question this need, they may feel that the organizational focus should be on its core competency and Information Technology just plays a role of an enabler. But on the contrary such organizations are in greater need of an Information Technology vision. The role of Information Technology is that of a business driver in today’s competitive environment and not just an enabler.

Now lets analyse the need and essence of Information Technology Landscape for a business organization.

Consider an XYZ organization, which after half a decade of existence had entered a phase of business growth. Till date the role of Information Technology would have been that of a support system. My experience says that most of the organizations in such a scenario tend to focus on their core competency and grabbing more business opportunities, and almost no attention is given to the key role Information Technology can play.

Keeping in mind the type of competition and constraints the business organization faces, like for example high demand and need for rapid increase in manufacturing capabilities, need of sizeable investments to enter new markets or more focus for business tie ups, its apparently difficult to focus and believe that Information Technology can be a business driver. But the fact of the matter is, it really is. So the question is how can it be done?

The organization requirements can be divided majorly into functional requirements (very specific to the industry domain), routine transactional requirements, content management requirements, workflow requirements and Infrastructural requirements.

Now the organization has to have an Information Technology Landscape plan, based on its current and future business landscape.

There can be phase wise implementation of the Information Technology landscape plan. Start with covering the domain functionalities (R&D, F&D etc), the benefits would be evident in this case. Followed by transactional systems (like ERP) and then content management systems. The benefits of such systems will be realized over a period of time, ideally after the stabilization period.

For workflow systems, they have to be built at an enterprise level. These workflow systems are of critical importance to an organization. The effectiveness of above systems can be greatly hampered by an inefficient workflow system in place.

Information Technology infrastructure is an on going process in an Information Technology landscape implementation. Any effective technology solution would have to be right collaboration of business software applications and hardware infrastructure.

The most critical of all is to always have an Integration Route, which the Information Technology landscape implementation strategy would follow. This well planned Integration Route is required for a holistic Information Technology perspective.

Gradually as the Information Technology landscape builds up in the organization, there will corresponding benefits in terms of business process automation, business process management, and finally leading to effective knowledge management with in the organization. In such a scenario, the Information Technology acts as a business driver; there onwards Information Technology perspective will be part of any future organizational strategy in scaling business growth.

April 24, 2007 — SearchInform Technologies has released a new version of MailSniffer 0.98.2.0 RC, a program designed to intercept all e-mail traffic on network protocol level, index the intercepted messages and conduct search through them.
An initial interception system settings manager has been added in the new version of SearchInform MailSniffer for user’s convenience. It is activated when the program first runs and helps the user to set the incoming and outgoing message interception system correctly.
Another significant enhancement is an added intercepted messages filter. Now the user can set the system in such a way that only letters from and to a certain IP address, a set of IP addresses, or certain MAC-addresses of network adapters will be intercepted. This innovation allows for much more detailed program settings as it enables the user to specify the computers electronic mail from which needs to be intercepted.
An improved efficiency of interception system makes the program function with a significantly higher overall speed. The new version also has an improved automatic letter code detection module.
Starting with the new version SearchInform MailSniffer is also enabled to intercept the passwords of e-mail boxes letters from which are sent and received.
Now all information on intercepted letters and on SearchInform MailSniffer’s performance in general can be sent to a specified e-mail address. These reports contain all information the user might need to monitor the letter interception system remotely.

M/S Star, the newcomer of the Tallink fleet, was launched and christened in Helsinki last November, and it started operating between Helsinki and Tallin on 5th April 2007. M/S Star has a 120-seat Business Lounge, and there is an Observation Lounge for private parties for up to 250 persons. The ferry can accommodate a maximum of 1900 passengers and carry up to 450 cars on multiple car decks. The voyage takes only two hours between Helsinki and Tallin.

Electrosonic Lightinen chose Cayin Technology as the digital signage solution provider and the delivered system in M/S Star covers the ice-cream bar, hamburger bar, pizzeria, snack bar, entrance and the shop areas. Each of the 29 different sized displays is attached to a networked SMP-PRO2 Media Player. The complete system is controlled via a web-based user interface on Cayin’s CMS Content Management Server, At the snack bar, there are altogether 10 displays with different menus and price tickers. At the shop and entrance areas, the displays are showing advertisements and prices.

SMP- PRO2 is an advanced zone-type display engine for digital signage applications. With Cayin’s Skin Editor, an intuitive, simple drag-and-drop tool, you can easily draw up to five dedicated areas for scrolling text, stored/live video, image slide show, and theme background.

With CMS server, administrators can centrally and remotely manage all SMP-PRO2 players located at different sites, and distribute right messages to be displayed at pre-scheduled time and designated places. Users can also choose to broadcast live streaming videos to all players via Cayin’s CMS server.
