Many individuals think of Caribbean art as nearby scenes and picturesque seascapes. But in the case of Guadeloupe’s modern art scene, you are amazed to discover a riches of originality. While Guadeloupe’s artists call upon island affects in creating their functions, the results are usually far from expected.

Koukara

Art professors Klodi Cancelier, Lucien Léogane, and Jacques Lampécinado founded Koukara in 1988. Today it’s Guadeloupe’s main art movement. Meaning “the Caribbean hues,” Koukara emphasizes the unity of the Caribbean individuals. Its avant-garde artistic seems to be abstract or surreal, usually with indigenous touches.

A key technique employed by Koukara artists is the Fibressences system, which creates mixed media pieces. Fibressences provides all-natural components in artworks, like pieces of lumber, coconut materials, glucose cane, and sand. These ingredients add an interesting three-dimensional standard to the function, and creating a close connection to the environment. Paintings in vibrant and deep colors create up most pieces, but there are some exceptions. Karine Gabon paints on dangling materials and different components, with an earth-toned color palette that improves her crude motifs; she moreover creates abstract sculptures. And Klodi Cancelier’s paper series juxtaposed pieces of handmade forms painted with different hues and symbols.

Koukara’s recognition has gradually improved over time. With countless of Guadeloupe’s artists taking piece in the movement, its design and ideals might probably continue to thrive in the coming years.

Other Contemporary Art

Aside from Koukara, Guadeloupe fosters the individual visions of additional artists also.

Thierry Bergame’s surreal pop art displays a singular fashion and sense of humor. On the additional hand, Déglas paints scenes with lighter tones and in a more naturalistic fashion, though he usually involves great ingredients like anthropomorphic animals and skeletons. Jean-Marc Hunt primarily utilizes objects like tools, pieces of lumber, and even a sewing machine to create his sculptures. And while his paintings share a synonymous fashion with all the Koukara group, his content is usually very different.

Even outside of Guadeloupe, its first-rate artists shine in the spotlight. They’ve participated in shows throughout the Caribbean, France, the U.S., Canada, and Costa Rica. In spite of its fairly little size, this island country cultivates big skill.
