Cork, located on the southern coast of Ireland at the mouth of the River Lee, is the country’s second-largest city. It has long been a thriving commercial hub and is renowned for its association with various sports, including Gaelic sports, hurling, soccer, racing, and yachting. However, it is in the realm of music that Cork has gained considerable fame over the past three decades.

Every year, Cork city hosts one of the largest jazz music Jazz Gets Modern With Acid Jazz - I believe that anyone who appreciates music and acid jazz, or has a particular taste in musical genres, can agree that sometimes listening to the same songs repeatedly can become tiresome. Your passion for the music may gradually diminish as you hear the same tracks over and over. In my opinion, this is a sign… events in the world. Taking place during the long Bank holiday weekend at the end of October, the festival spans three days and nights of official events, although the music and celebrations often extend throughout the entire week. Last year, nearly 50,000 people attended, enjoying performances by nearly 1,000 musicians from around thirty different countries.

This jazz festival is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the world, attracting renowned musicians from various genres. Over its 34-year history, esteemed artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Cleo Laine, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, and many more have graced its stages. Each year brings new stars, and in 2010, the festival featured the Esbjorn Svenson Trio, Mose Allison Quartet, Gary Burton – Richard Galliano Quartet, and The Blind Boys of Alabama, among others.

In addition to the scheduled performances, spontaneous and impromptu music fills the streets throughout the weekend. With over eighty venues scattered across the city, larger establishments like The Cork Opera House, The Everyman Palace Theatre, and The Metropole Hotel provide exceptional settings. Interestingly, the festival’s origins trace back to 1978 when Jim Mountjoy, the marketing manager of The Metropole Hotel, initiated it as a means to attract more customers to the hotel. Little did he anticipate the festival’s remarkable growth in the years to come. Pubs, lounges, and small theaters also showcase a variety of performances, complemented by workshops, lectures, and fringe events throughout the weekend.

While jazz may no longer dominate the music scene as it once did, it still enjoys a significant following worldwide, continually evolving and experimenting with various forms. The genre experienced a notable revival during the 1960s and 1970s and continues to thrive in many locations across the globe. In Cork, it can draw in as many enthusiasts as contemporary pop and rock festivals.

Cork is renowned for hosting numerous festivals throughout the year, but none rival the size and reputation of the Jazz Festival. It is estimated that the festival generates up to 50 million Euros in business for the city, benefiting hotels, restaurants, pubs, and shops due to the influx of visitors.

Looking ahead, Cork eagerly anticipates another exciting Jazz Festival in 2011, scheduled for October 28th to 31st. Despite the challenges posed by the Irish and global financial situation, visitor numbers are expected to match those of 2010, if not surpass them. Festival-goers are advised to book accommodations early to avoid disappointment.
