Both instruments have their place, but understanding the key differences will help you choose the right instrument for your needs. If you already have one type of instrument, should you switch? Here are some factors to help you decide.

Firstly, be aware that the tone of any violin is subjective and cannot be measured and quantified scientifically. If that were possible, there would be a computer program capable of “listening” to a song and determining if it were going to be a hit or not.

Even though the tone (and sound quality) of a violin is subjective and the sound from an electric violin can be altered through various electronic tweaks and adjustments, there is one aspect that cannot be changed.

No amount of electronic tweaking can make even the most expensive electric violin match the sound quality of an acoustic violin.

With an acoustic violin, what you play is what you get, but with an electric violin, you can add reverb, tone control, and more to achieve some impressive sounding (albeit non-traditional) music.

You can amplify the sound of an acoustic violin using a microphone, but the slightest movement of the violin may alter what the audience hears. In orchestras where no one moves, this works well; however, in live (and lively) performances, the versatility of an electric violin offers significant advantages.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you’re uncertain which type of violin you prefer, it’s good to know that you’re not locked in, as it’s quite easy to switch the type of violin you play.
