Ask any devotee of classic rock who they would place at the top of the best guitarists list, and you will get a resounding consensus that Jimi Hendrix sits on top. His music was unlike anything anyone had ever heard before. It was profoundly electrifying (literally) and steered clear of formulaic pop. Listeners had a visceral response to his songs. This was largely due to the musical equipment that Jimi Hendrix used. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look not only at his career but also at some of the equipment that made his sound so special.

Born in 1942, he emerged from Seattle, Washington. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army, he played in several low-paying gigs from 1961 to 1965. However, this fact did not in any way reflect what was to come. In 1967, he burst onto the rock scene with the release of his album “Are You Experienced,” which is considered one of the most incredible debut albums of all time.

As mentioned earlier, Jimi created music on stage that was unlike anything else. One significant reason was his use of cutting-edge musical technology.

Let’s start with his guitar. He played a Fender Stratocaster, and he produced notes from that instrument like no one else. The “Strat” was not new when Jimi first picked it up. What was new was what he did with it. Anyone who attended Woodstock or saw the film of the same name cannot forget his performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” He evoked from the guitar an interpretation like no other.

It should come as no surprise that loudness is favored when it comes to rock and roll. One way to deliver that to the fans is by amplifying the guitar. To achieve this, Hendrix used a Marshall Lead 100-watt Plexi. Many others, including Pete Townshend, also used this Marshall amplifier.

A significant portion of Jimi’s music had a distinct altered sound. This was a key element of his unique style. The equipment that created these distortions were the Fuzz Face fuzz pedal to make the sound fuzzy and the Octavia octave-up pedal to give it the wah-wah effect.

The musical equipment of Jimi Hendrix undoubtedly contributed to his fame. However, let us not forget that his natural playing ability was transcendent. His songs continue to resonate with young music listeners today, forty-one years after his passing.
