I have been an enthusiast of David Baldacci since I read The Winner back in 1997. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style, and I have read all his books to date, eagerly awaiting his new releases. The Camel Club is no exception to the rule, offering another thrilling page-turner.
Cast of Characters:
Members of the Camel Club:
- Oliver Stone: camps outside the White House to protest the government and lives at a church, where he is known as the lead conspiracy theorist.
- Caleb Shaw: enjoys dressing in period costumes and works at the Library of Congress in the rare books department.
- Reuben Rhodes: a former government worker turned loading dock employee and drug burnout.
- Milton Farb: suffers from OCD, has a perfect memory, is a mathematical prodigy, and owns a website-building company, having made significant money on Jeopardy.
Other Characters:
- Alex Ford: a secret service agent whose loyalties are a bit unclear and is nearing retirement.
- Carter Grey: intelligence chief.
Plot: The Camel Club gathers for a secret meeting to discuss the latest conspiracy theories when they stumble upon a crime. They witness the murder of an intelligence analyst and barely escape with their lives intact.
The next day, the newspaper reports the death as a suicide, which the Camel Club knows is false. As they begin to investigate, they become targets of the same killers.
Meanwhile, Alex Ford disagrees with the official verdict and is reassigned to the Presidential security detail.
Unbeknownst to Alex, a terrorist cell is plotting to assassinate the president in his hometown. At the same time, the Camel Club is trying to uncover the truth about the murder while staying alive.
Multiple plots unfold simultaneously, and the story can sometimes be a bit confusing. However, there are plenty of surprises, including the attempted assassination of the president (what a twist) and the reason behind the murder.
This is an excellent read for anyone who enjoys intrigue, spy thrillers, terrorists, and conspiracies. It’s hard to predict how it will turn out, as David Baldacci consistently provides a surprise ending. I loved this book! With 688 pages of pure intrigue, I rate it 9 out of 10.
