History of Steinway Pianos

Steinway Pianos was founded in 1853 by a German immigrant and master cabinetmaker named Henry Engelhard Steinway, in Manhattan, New York. Henry was an experienced craftsman who had already built his first piano while living in Seesen, Germany. Before establishing Steinway & Sons, Henry had built a total of 482 pianos, making the name for the company’s first piano, number 483, a natural choice. At the time, this piano was priced at $500 and can now be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Over the next 40 years since the company’s inception, Henry and his sons Charles, William, C.F. Theodore, Albert, and Henry Junior continued to develop not only the business but also the mechanisms inside the piano. It was during these four decades, leading up to the turn of the century in 1900, that a total of 114 patented inventions were created, invented, and developed, many of which are still in use today.
