Lady Gaga’s upcoming music video for “Judas” is expected to be an interpretation of how the artist views the Holy Bible. After the filming for the Gaga-directed video was completed, her co-director Laurieann Gibson sat down with MTV to discuss the film and Gaga’s upcoming TV show, “The Dance Scene,” which will premiere this Sunday.
Gibson, who is a practicing Christian, expressed her gratitude to God for elevating her career to its current status. She explained that many people anticipate Gaga to distort Bible references and take an experimental approach with “Judas,” but they will be surprised by the scale and strength of the content. Gibson described it as “groundbreaking,” creating suspense about what Gaga has in store for her first film as a co-director. Gibson revealed that the industry will be truly surprised by the graphic content of “Judas,” and it will be an empowering creation from the “Born This Way” singer.
When Gaga personally crafts a film, it is expected to be visually captivating, and she has cast notable figures like Norman Reedus for the role of Judas. Gibson, who witnessed Reedus’ performance firsthand, described it as “prolific” and labeled the music video as “badass.” She also announced that Gaga will portray the character of Mary Magdalene.
Both women had concerns that another director might not be able to effectively capture the vision they wanted for the video. Therefore, they took the reins themselves and decided to give directing a try.
Gibson mentioned that they had considered director Nick Knight’s ideas for the song but felt that it resembled Gaga’s previous concept, “Born This Way.” To maintain originality, they decided against using Knight’s storyline and opted for their own new creation.
Unlike others, Gaga and Gibson had a clear vision for how they wanted the video to turn out. They approached several directors to assist Gaga with her directorial debut, but scheduling conflicts arose, and it was suggested that Gibson, who is usually the creative director, should co-direct “Judas” with the pop superstar.
It was not an easy decision for Gibson, as she had just finished working on a vocalist’s Monster Ball HBO Special and was unsure if she had the stamina for such a significant project. However, the offer was too good to resist, and she agreed to join forces with Gaga.
Gibson saved her praise for Gaga for the end and stated that their religious connection is evident in the “Judas” music video, which she described as extremely powerful and impactful.
