Drum and bass music is a popular genre that emerged in the UK during the early 1990s and quickly gained traction in clubs across the country. While it is often referred to as D&B or DnB, and in some regions as jungle, it all pertains to the same genre of music. This electronic dance music style took the dance floors by storm.

Although London is commonly recognized as the birthplace of drum and bass music, it became associated with various cities throughout the UK. As the genre grew in popularity, it began to spread internationally, with the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and North America embracing the dance style. By the mid-1990s, drum and bass music had found fans in many different countries.

The genre is characterized by its fast, upbeat tracks with quick breakbeats, typically ranging between 160 and 190 beats per minute (bpm). However, this can vary depending on the specific drum and bass track being played, and older tracks may have different tempos. The older style of drum and bass often featured sub-bass and thick basslines that defined the various styles within the genre.

As drum and bass music started to develop its own identity, the term “jungle” was used less, and the influences it had previously drawn upon were discarded. While early drum and bass music had definite traces of reggae and dancehall, these elements faded away as the genre’s popularity grew.

More intricate rhythms and backbeats were utilized to create a completely new and distinctive sound that would become known as drum and bass music. Although many people initially saw jungle and drum and bass as very similar, true music enthusiasts could easily identify the differences between the two.

Drum and bass music also features a unique 2-beat drum sound, while jungle tends to be more choppy and lacking in structure. Many drum and bass tracks incorporate samples from other songs, contributing to their widespread appeal. Music fans could hear familiar elements in new and exciting ways, which helped promote the distinct sound of drum and bass.

In addition to popular songs, drum and bass music often sampled pieces from well-known films, creating intriguing sounds. With its growing popularity and strong musical structure, the genre was destined for success.
