The individuals and companies that are thriving today prioritize creativity and innovation in their product design and strategic choices. In a nutshell, they achieve success by empowering creative individuals within their organization. Here are three examples that vividly illustrate this point: Steve Jobs, Jonathan Ive, and Pixar.

Steve Jobs, the co-founder and CEO of Apple Computers, is a name known to many. His achievements, industry-shifting concepts and strategies, creativity in brand approach, product deployment, rapid consumer base expansion, and sometimes controversial decisions, provide ample material to fill numerous books. His example serves as a compelling case for recognizing the role that innovative people play in the business world.

This article focuses on the outcomes of Jobs empowering the right people to become industry leaders and create groundbreaking products in two instances: investing in/buying The Graphics Group, now known as Pixar, and hiring Jonathan Ive. The products developed by the brilliant minds at Pixar and the innovative designs of Ive at Apple have been incredibly well-received. The intense creativity applied in their respective approaches and practices has inspired industry-wide changes.

The Apple iMac was the brainchild of the brilliant design chief, Jonathan Ive. Ten years ago, the first-generation iMac, a revolutionary all-in-one desktop, became the highest-selling PC in the US upon its release. The iconic iMac continues to dominate the market, but Ive and his team have not rested on their laurels. With the introduction of the iPod, followed by the iPhone, and most recently, the iPad, Apple has become not only a global household name but also a highly desired consumer brand.

The combination of revolutionary innovation, Ive’s (and Apple’s) impeccable design aesthetics, adaptable and user-friendly operating systems, and the ability to enhance the full functionality of Apple’s devices through the highly successful iTunes and App stores has made Apple products appealing, coveted, and critically acclaimed.

Pixar stands for technological advancement, creative integrity, and the highest standard practices. Above all, they value talent and the creative process in all aspects of their business. This philosophy has led them to produce eleven critically acclaimed and commercially successful animated features (as of March 2011). Pixar has received numerous prestigious awards and honors for their films, their contributions to technological advancements, and their empowering model, which prioritizes artistry, creativity, and creative integrity, inspired by Frank Gehry’s “Organization of the Artist” approach.

Empowering creative individuals within a company is always a winning strategy. The luminaries highlighted in this article have contributed to and revolutionized their industries in more ways than just their evident technological achievements. They have also introduced new models of best practices, set trends in technology, offered market insights, and implemented effective HR management.
