When installing a graphics card, it is essential to give careful consideration to the type of card you choose, especially if you are a 3Ds Max user. I am pleased to share my experiences with the two leading GPU brands – ATI and Nvidia, along with some tips and tricks for installation.

ATI

Driver update: As a 3Ds Max user myself, I have found that AMD products are not ideal for creating flash animations, as ATI graphics drivers are primarily updated for gaming. This can affect the performance of image-creation software.

The MAYA phenomenon: The abnormal box on the screen, known as MAYA, is a significant issue. When changing materials and rendering, the screen can become filled with MAYA. This situation can be very frustrating, as these boxes sometimes appear in various shapes and sizes and cannot be removed.

Nvidia:

In contrast, the above two issues do not occur with Nvidia cards. I cannot pinpoint the exact reason, as rendering primarily uses the CPU and not the GPU. However, it is true that I cannot use ATI on my computer for 3Ds Max. Additionally, if you want to play games while using half of your computer’s processing power, Nvidia is a better choice.

Advice: Based on my personal experience and the information I have gathered, the Core i5 and i7 (generation 2) are good choices for those who want to create flash animations with 3Ds Max, as they feature the AVX instruction set. Although no current software utilizes this feature, I believe Autodesk 2012 may use it, resulting in faster operation.

How to install: At times, we need to install the graphics card ourselves, which can result in errors and failures. Among all installation issues, drivers seem to cause the most trouble. However, installing graphics card drivers is not as difficult as it may seem. Just ensure that you have followed these steps:

  1. Download Nvidia drivers: Download the appropriate Nvidia drivers from the official website or another reliable source.
  2. Double click on the downloaded driver to install: With everything set to default, don’t worry about any prompts that appear. Simply double click to install the driver.
