Paintings have the power to bring color into our lives, and oil paintings are at the forefront of this. However, each oil had a different drying time and sheen, so painters chose the oil based on the needs of their subject.

In addition to Europe, the Asian subcontinent also utilized oil paints, primarily in Buddhist paintings from the fifth to ninth centuries. Unfortunately, these paintings did not gain recognition until the fifteenth century. During the Middle Ages, oil painting practices shifted westward and became the primary medium for artists to express their views and perceptions. This can be clearly seen in the Netherlands during the Renaissance period, with tempera being replaced by oils.

The use of tempera in Europe indicates that oil paintings began to emerge independently there. Shields for tournaments and decorative pieces often featured oil-based paintings due to the added durability provided by the oil.

Oil paintings truly gained popularity in the fifteenth century with the Renaissance. Painters from northern Europe, such as Jan Van Eyck, are credited with exploring the medium to its fullest and elevating it to its current status as one of the primary painting mediums. Van Eyck pioneered painting with oils on wooden panels, while Theophilus promoted painting over treatise.
