Before playing the guitar, it’s important to become familiar with the instrument itself. The guitar is similar to the Indian sitar and another instrument called the mandolin. However, learning to play a guitar is best done with a music instructor.
A standard guitar typically has six strings, although some guitars have more, even up to eighteen. There are also electric guitars, which are commonly played by rock musicians. The strings are ordered as EADGBE – 654321, producing a range of sounds from wider to thinner.
First, sit comfortably, preferably on a chair. Hold the neck of the guitar with your left hand, with the back touching your torso. Place your right hand over the guitar, keeping it slightly above the instrument and relaxed. Don’t tense your muscles; simply relax and play. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process.
To play the strings, use a plectrum—a small, triangular piece of plastic. Start by plucking the strings from the thinner E, A, D, G, B to the thickest E. The strings on the guitar are called scales, with major scales producing a thicker sound and minor scales producing a thinner sound.
To begin playing, place your left-hand fingers on the frets, which are metal strips opposite the metal strings. Press your fingers between the metal strings, not on them, and play using your fingertips rather than your entire finger. Placing your finger closer to the fret produces cleaner notes. With your other hand, keep strumming the same string with the plectrum. This requires mental agility and the ability to balance fretting and strumming with both hands. Practice playing notes from a music book using the major and minor scales you’ve learned.
As you practice on your guitar, you’ll develop an understanding of the sounds and notes. When your notes don’t sound right, it’s time to tune your guitar. Tuning is done using the pegs located at the end of the guitar, where the strings are attached. Tightening and loosening these pegs adjusts the pitch, producing the correct notes. Regular tuning is an essential part of playing the guitar.
Before playing, consider the following tips: Purchase a quality guitar from brands like PRS, Gibson, Dean, Gretsch, Ibanez, Martin, Jackson, Fender, or Schecter. Keep your nails trimmed to avoid interference while playing; get a music book for learning the guitar; arrange for a comfortable seat; have spare plectrums on hand; and take breaks between practice sessions to rest your fingers.
