Digital illustration Digital Illustration - The Art of Digital Illustration Digital illustration refers to the creation of artwork using computer software, rather than manipulating existing images. This form of art is distinct from traditional methods, as it relies on technology to produce and enhance images. A common tool used for digital illustration is the graphics tablet, which connects to a… involves the use of computers to create art. It should not be confused with the manipulation of existing art or images using various types of software; instead, it involves creating entirely new art through digital methods.

A popular method of digital illustration involves the use of a graphics tablet. This tablet connects to a computer and comes with a stylus or pen. As an artist draws on the tablet, the resulting image transfers to the computer as a digital illustration. Graphics tablets serve as input devices that convert images drawn on the tablet into digital images, which can then be viewed and stored on a computer. The image can be enhanced and edited on the computer using various software applications.

Some artists also use a computer mouse for drawing images, but it can be challenging to achieve highly detailed or intricate results. While suitable for simple figures and drawings, mice are not ideal for detailed illustrations. For intricate drawings, graphics tablets are the preferred method, offering pressure sensitivity and more flexibility for artists.

There are two primary types of software used for digital illustrations. Vector-based software draws shapes and lines based on mathematical principles, resulting in scalable drawings that can be easily enlarged without losing quality. In contrast, raster-based software creates images from pixels, which are small rectangles that form an image on a screen. With this method, digital illustrations are not scalable, and resizing can affect the image quality.

Digital illustration has become increasingly popular and is used in various fields, such as graphic design, web design, and software design. These illustrations are commonly found in comic books, websites, T-shirts, and posters. They are also crucial for creating animations and editing photos for magazines and newspapers. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop are among the most well-known software applications for digital illustration.
