Modern abstract art holds a special place in the hearts and minds of people. To the uninitiated, it seems as if any second grader could produce what only a true artist can master. There is a tendency for some to underestimate the real expertise and technical skill required by an abstract artist. I once overheard someone in a gallery comment on a piece they were looking at, expressing disbelief that people would “spend good money on a piece of crap like that.” I held my tongue because I remembered how, not too long ago, I had uttered similarly uninformed comments. I knew that this person simply didn’t know better, as they hadn’t taken the time to learn about this beautiful art form .
An abstraction is something that is not meant to be an accurate representation of reality. It is not a detailed depiction. Instead, it is a form of disassociation. It is challenging to extract meaning from the metaphysical. It can often be vague or impersonal, detached and cold. On the other hand, modern abstract art can also be incredibly warm and personal, offering unique and deeply emotional satisfaction. It can connect us to a better understanding of who we are, what our lives mean, and where we fit in the bigger picture. It is the abstraction that allows the mind to fill in the blanks and find meaning where none is intended. Only when the viewer takes the time to truly contemplate the impact of the abstraction do meanings begin to emerge.
I have often found it amusing how the stereotypical gallery attendee is portrayed. Black turtleneck sweaters for men, little black dresses for women, sunglasses worn indoors (I never understood this one), a stylish haircut with bangs swept across the forehead, a faraway contemplative look in their expressions, an air of importance and knowledge, and sporadic murmurs about the flow of lines or the harmony of colors. These caricatures make me laugh. Are they even real? In the real world, people from all walks of life are drawn to art museums seeking connection and meaning.
I’m just a simple small-town dweller, but I learned to appreciate modern abstract art by giving myself a chance to be around it and the artists who create it. Perhaps the best advice I can offer anyone wanting to better appreciate this art form is to attend an open house or a special evening for the artist at an art gallery . Being able to spend even just a few minutes with the artist can open your eyes in ways that merely reading about the art never will. If you sense the emotional ties and the very real connectedness that many artists have not only with their work but also with the people they hope to touch, you’ll begin to understand for yourself what a special thing modern abstract art truly is. You might find it has more to do with the impact than with the cause.
