Indie music emerged in North America and the UK during the 1980s as a subgenre of alternative rock, although elements of indie rock can be traced back to the 1960s in the music of bands like The Kinks. The definition of indie rock is a subject of debate among musicians and critics, with some arguing that indie rock bands should be signed to independent record labels, while others emphasize the importance of the creative artistry and sound.

The ethos of indie rock extended to maintaining complete control over the sound and image of the band, free from interference from record labels. In the 1980s, bands like REM and The Pixies gained popularity both in the USA and internationally, establishing themselves as prominent indie bands. The Smiths, with the release of their self-titled debut album in 1984, became the definitive British indie music band, enjoying a successful career.

During the 1990s, Pearl Jam and Nirvana helped popularize a new style of music known as grunge. This sound gained significant popularity and reached an even broader audience following Kurt Cobain’s death. Another style of indie music that emerged during this time was lo-fi, with Beck being a typical representative. This style employed simple recording techniques and made a conscious effort to not cater to mainstream tastes.

In the new millennium, it became increasingly challenging for indie bands to remain independent as their popularity grew. The internet The World-wide-web Niche - The global economy has been severely impacted. Millions of people have lost their jobs, many are losing their homes, and retirement portfolios are disappearing at an alarming rate. What happens in the World Wide Web? We often discuss the global financial tsunami, an economic crisis on a scale that rivals the Great Depression of the… played a role in exposing indie bands to a wider audience, which attracted the attention of major labels. Nevertheless, some indie bands managed to maintain their independence while achieving critical and commercial success. Modest Mouse and Death Cab For Cutie are two well-known examples of indie bands that signed with major labels and went on to release highly acclaimed records. Bright Eyes is another band that has stayed true to its independent label and still achieved significant success.

Many cities around the world have developed their own vibrant independent music scenes. One notable example is Madchester, which thrived in Manchester during the late 1980s and gave rise to a wave of new talent. Bands associated with Madchester, such as Happy Mondays, James, and The Stone Roses, contributed to the scene’s success. While more indie bands have now signed with major record labels, many believe that as long as they maintain control over the sound of their music, they can still be legitimately called indie.
