Philosophy and contemporary art painting exhibit intriguing similarities and variations. Before delving further, it is important to address the question: When is a contemporary art painting considered contemporary? Generally, contemporary art is considered to have emerged between the 1860s and 1970s, whereas art produced since then is typically referred to as modern art, distinguishing it from contemporary art. It is worth noting that contemporary art and philosophy often share common objectives, albeit achieved through different means. The extent to which individuals establish significant connections between engaging in philosophical conversations or observing art depends largely on their individual capacity for interpretation and application.

A significant characteristic of contemporary art painting is the noticeable departure from the way classical or traditional artists approached nature, the environment, and societal norms and structures. It tended to convey more emotion on canvas. During this period, art became more intertwined with philosophy, to the point that the visual aspect of the artwork became dominated by the philosophical underpinnings upon which it was constructed. This does not imply that artists exclusively painted with philosophical intentions in mind. Rather, the art itself began to engage individuals in philosophical introspection in ways it had not done before, making these processes more explicit and intentional.

As mentioned earlier, both philosophy and contemporary art painting share similar goals. Both aim to shed light on the nature of the world, the self, and our place within it, and strive to expand our understanding and exploration of the internal workings of our shared human experience. While this holds true, some argue that there is no objective or purpose to art. They contend that art is inherently purer than that and that whether an individual is moved by a particular piece has nothing to do with the artist’s intention. For these individuals, attempting to define the purpose of art misses the point entirely. I will leave it to you to decide which perspective resonates more with you.

Philosophical inquiries challenge us to explore questions about the nature of reality, the essence of selfhood, the ethical foundations of society, how we ascertain our claims to knowledge, and other metaphysical and epistemological aspects of existence that have captivated people throughout the ages. Deliberately or not, contemporary art painting incites a similar introspection about these fundamental aspects and compels us to ask similar questions. Color, form, shape, and texture are additional tools through which we confront and engage with such inquiries and issues.

In terms of eliciting inspiration and contemplation, contemporary art painting, like philosophy, possesses inherent limitations. Both are inherently abstract, making understanding and application elusive to all but the most dedicated participant. Since significance appears to be a subjective standard, only attainable through the creation of meaningful interpretations upon encountering a contemporary art painting or pondering a philosophical argument, it is logical to suggest that one should think deeply and feel profoundly about both.

Fortunately, the objective is not to navigate through life without forging any emotional or intellectual connections with the inspirations and sentiments provoked by a painting or a philosophical idea. Instead, such connections are encouraged and celebrated. When we behold a contemporary art painting, we experience deep emotions. When we contemplate a compelling philosophical argument, we are moved internally. Both experiences make us feel connected and grateful to be alive.
