slide guitarPlaying the slide guitar may not be as intimidating as it initially seems. With a bit of knowledge and some slide guitar lessons, you’ll be playing skillfully in no time. Slide guitar has been popular for over a hundred years and is a favored technique among blues, jazz, country, and soul artists.

Slide Guitar

Slides can be made from metal, glass, or plastic, and it’s even possible to create a homemade slide using the top of a glass bottle, though caution should be taken to avoid injury. In the past, musicians also used bones to create homemade slides.

Playing with a slide can be somewhat challenging for musicians, as muting strings becomes more difficult and the slide itself may feel weighted until the player becomes accustomed to it.

Numerous online resources offer free slide guitar lessons through videos and articles. Before starting to learn how to play with a slide, you’ll need some essential items: an acoustic or electric guitar , a capo, a tuner, and any other necessary accessories for playing.

Guitarists should be aware that playing with a slide requires tuning adjustments. Standard tuning uses the notes: E, A, D, G, B, and E. Open tuning in the key of D major uses the notes: D, G, D, G, B, D. Open tuning is popular among blues musicians, although some guitarists may not be familiar with or have not experimented with open tuning.

Open tuning allows barre chords to be played using a slide, which can be helpful for those struggling with hand strength. However, keep in mind that using a slide produces a unique sound that may not be desirable for every situation. It’s recommended to at least try playing with a slide to see if the technique works for you, and if so, continue to develop your skills and incorporate various playing methods.

Famous blues musicians who have used a slide include Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton. The slide sound seems to work well for the musical styles these artists prefer. If blues is your genre of choice, playing with a slide could be a perfect fit. Keith Urban’s earlier music features Kurt Lorange, an exceptional slide guitarist originally from Canada who now resides in Australia.

Learning to play slide guitar could reveal a hidden blues talent and lead to enjoyable musical experiences. Mastering the various techniques and styles takes time and patience, so practice diligently with your slide.

Slide guitar lessons, the distinctive sound of blues, and tips on electric guitars, such as tuning a double-neck steel guitar, can help you learn how to tune guitars for jazz, blues, or acoustic music.
